INTRODUCTION

When my longtime friend Troy Nelson approached me to write a drum method entitled How to PlayDrums in 14 Days, I thought the same thing you may have been thinking when you read the title: Thats next to impossible! If you share that reaction, youre not alone! However, the idea behind this book is simple: play every day! If you do so in an organized and dedicated manner, youll be a better drummer within 14 days.

The premise is to spend 90 minutes a day for 14 days and, at the end of that period of time, youll have advanced in your knowledge, skill, and excitement of playing the drums! I encourage you to use this concept as the model of your approach. Now, if you cant initially master each of the days figures and drills, thats OK! You will find that sitting down to diligently work on the ideas within this book will stimulate you to get better on your instrument each and every day. Thats the best part about playing musicthat each day you can improve! In other words, the work that you put in each day on your instrument keeps increasing your skill and your desire to hone your skills and play the instrument even more! What you need to remember is this: studying music is a lifelong occupation. This book is merely the beginning!

The concept of this method is that, each day, you focus on specific, short 15-minute drills. You change it up every 15 minutes to keep your mind fresh. Each day, youre adding to your knowledge and skill.

At the end of each week, you have a bit of a testsome drumset solo ideas that consist of musical phrases and melodic tom ideas that move you around the drumset.

Ive attempted to give you a pedagogically sound progression of learning, as well as some challenges in each weeks studies. Many of the lessons in this book are ideas Ive shared with my drum students for decades, and I know that they will help you become a better drummer!

Truth be told, as you explore this book, it may take you longer than 14 days to complete it, and thats OK! Dont get discouraged or frustrated. Instead, stay focused and be excited about what you will sound like in two weeks, four weeks, two months, six months, and years from now. You are starting an extraordinary journey! Remember to have fun! A musical experience awaits you!

A few quick reminders before you start playing: You will see this repeated throughout the book, but as you practice, remember to count. This is so important! Also, remember to practice slowly and work tempos up as youre feeling comfortable. Fast and sloppy is not what will get you a gig! Use a metronome for practice sessions, listen to music (as Im writing this, Im listening to one of my favorite drummers, Elvin Jones), watch videos of the great drummerssome of whom are mentioned throughout this bookplay along to the radio, go to concerts, collect recordings, be open to all genres of music, and find your own ways to keep your excitement going. One more thingand this is the ultimate experiencefind musicians to play music with. This will be the most pleasurable way to learn to play your instrument in a musical way. Lets get going!

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

A note from Troy Nelson, editor and creator of the Play Guitar in 14 Daysseries: This book is divided into 14 chapters, one for each day of the two-week program. Within each chapter/

day are six sections. Some section topics are carried over from day to day and get increasingly difficult, while other sections present entirely new concepts each day. The goal is to spend 15 minutes playing the exercises in each section, for a total of 90 minutes (15 X 6 = 90) per day.

Granted, 90 minutes of practice per day can seem daunting to some, especially if youre unaccustomed to practices sessions lasting longer than 2030 minutes. And thats OK! Just because the book is struc-tured to teach you drums in 14 days doesnt mean you have to follow the program precisely. On the contrary, if you have, say, 30 minutes to devote to the book each day, then simply extend each chapter to a three-day practice session. The material is there for you to use, whether you get through the book in 14 days or 40.

While the 14-day plan is the goal, its probably unrealistic for some. The important thing is to stick with it, because the material in this book will have you playing the drums with confidence and credibility. How quickly just depends on the amount of time youre able to spend on getting there.

Before you begin your daily sessions, however, I suggest spending at least 1520 minutes listening to the accompanying audio to get a feel for the forthcoming exercises, as well as reading the text in each section for some pointers and to better understand the material youre about to learn. That way, you can spend the full 90 minutes (or however much time you have to practice that day) practicing the actual exercises.

To help you keep track of time in your practice sessions, time codes are included throughout the book.

Simply set the timer on your smart phone to 90 minutes (1:30)or however much time you can dedicate to your sessionand move on to a new category every 15 minutes. Or you can set the timer to 15

minutes (0:15) and move on to the next category when the timer goes off.

Next, set your metronome (or click track) to a tempo at which you can play the exercise all the way through without making too many mistakes (6088 beats per minute [BPM] is probably a good starting point for most exercises). Once youre able to play the exercise cleanly, increase your tempo by 1020
