D EDICATION
E VERY DAY PEOPLE walk into my office hoping to become healthier. Many are obese or overweight dieters frustrated with their inability to keep the pounds off for good or with doctors who cant seem to fix their overweight issues. For these patients, I cherish the opportunity to inform them that there is hopethat they can lose the weight and become healthier.
Yet every now and then I meet with patients who are on their last line of hope. I can tell by the painful, exasperated, despondent look in their eyes. No matter what they try, no matter how faithful they are to an eating program or how religious an exerciser they have become, no matter what various medications or supplements theyve taken, they still cant lose weight. Without knowing it, they are metabolically compromised. And yet possibly the saddest part is that they have lost hope.
Because of what they and countless others have gone through, I dedicate this book to all who are metabolically compromised. To those who feel hopeless, helpless, and with no way out, I pray this book offers information that will become your beacon in the night. To those who feel lost in your journey toward a healthy life, my desire is that this book serves as a road map to redirect you to a future filled with wellness. I want you to lose weight, regain your health, and feel great again. I want you to dream again and daily forgive yourself, accept yourself, and love yourself.

C OME FLY WITH DreamFlight... because we get you there at least 5 percent of the time.
Would you choose to fly on an airline that had this kind of motto? Of course not! With a track record of arriving safely at a destination only 5 percent of the time, you wouldnt dare set foot on one of their planes. Yet every day, dieters embark on a new diet with the same success rate.
Some hop on board the latest hyped-up, low-fat, wonder-working program that has made it past the late-night infomercial phase to become a New York Times best seller. Still others prefer a more adventurous journey with a no-carb miracle pound-shedder that has a host of B-list celebrities touting its amazing results. Of course, almost all who set out to lose weight via one of these diets swear that it will be absolutely, positively the last one theyll ever try.
It seems everyone is looking for the Diet to End All Diets. Sadly, theyre looking for something that doesnt exist. Why? Because in the long run, dieting just doesnt work. Some reports indicate that only 2 percent of all dieters manage to lose weight and keep it off for good; others claim its closer to 5 percent. Although those figures are hotly contested, what we do know for certain is that even those researchers who support dieting concur that diets fail at least 80 to 90 percent of the time.
By now you might be thinking this is an odd way to begin a diet book. Youre probably wondering, Dr. Colbert, why would you even write a diet book if diets dont work? Why should I bother trying to lose weight if it will most likely come back?
S UCCESS FOR L IFE
Ill be honest with you: If you are just looking to continue that pattern of following here-today, gone-tomorrow fad diets, you might as well put down this book now. Go ahead, you have my permission. Why? Because I am not a fan of diets. In fact, I think dieting, over the long haul, is one of the surest ways to become frustrated, discouraged, fed up, and even depressed about losing weight. How do I know this? Because after treating more than forty thousand patients over the past twenty-five years, I have observed some definitive commonalities among those who repeatedly attempted to lose weight, only to gain it back. I have also found a medically verifiable answer that leads to lifetime success in this area.
