HIPPOCRATES, THE FATHER OF MODERN MEDICINE
FASTING HAS BEEN around since the beginning of time, but only in the last twenty to thirty years have we come to better understand (thanks to technology and medical breakthroughs) just how beneficial fasting can be.
Yet even today, we are learning more about the positive impact fasting can have on the body as a whole and on specific parts, specific organs, and even specific cells.
The results may astound you!
To fast is to abstain from foodpartially or completelyfor a period of time. Fasting has immediate benefits (mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually) to your body, including these:
You usually have more energy! Laziness and lethargy no longer keep you from exercising.
Cravings are generally under control! Wanting sweets and carbs that lead to extra pounds is common, but fasting usually brings those cravings under better control.
You often lose weight! A direct result of going without food means your body begins to burn fat instead of sugar, and you usually lose weight.
Emotions are usually in check! Anger and rage that may send you into a frenzy in traffic or cause you to say hurtful things to your loved ones can be directly reduced by fasting.
Your health improves! From head to toe, your bodys overall health gets a boost as a result of the detoxing and fasting process.
You are in control! Loneliness, anxiety, depression, and grief have less power to trigger you to seek comfort in sugary, starchy foods.
Your brain loves it! Fasting offers greater mental focus, attention, and memory.
Your gut is happy! Many sicknesses and symptoms stem from an unhappy gut, and fasting improves your gut health significantly. And if your gut is happy, it literally will make you happy!
Your liver is usually able to detox effectively!
But many more benefits come from fasting and making fasting a part of your lifestyle. I have had thousands of patients over the years apply fasting to their regimen, and the list of health benefits they experienced as a result would fill volumes of books. Some diseases are stopped cold by fasting. I have seen it many times.
For example, patients with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes get tremendous results from fasting. They also change their diet, exercise, and take a few supplements, but fasting plays a big part in helping their bodies heal. That is just one example. I have countless stories I could tell.
Depending on your health goals or health needs, fasting may be especially effective. It really depends where you are, what you need, and where you are going.
I include a twenty-one-day detox fasting program later in the book. This is ideal for supporting your liver, cleansing and detoxifying your body, and giving a rest to your gut that will benefit you for years to come.
To make the process easier, each day in the twenty-one-day detox comes with dietary guidelines and encouragement for the physical aspects of your fast. That is always time well spent.
Others are looking to fasting as an avenue to lose weight. It can certainly help! I have had many patients use fasting to push their bodies out of the plateau they are in. They have already taken steps to lose weight and have had some success, but sometimes our bodies level off and seem stuck at a certain weight. Either full-day fasting or intermittent fasting is powerful and can give your body the push it needs to kick your fat-burning metabolism into higher gear.
Many patients use fasting for their specific medical needs. They have symptoms of sickness or disease and dont want to throw a prescription at it, though that is what our society as a whole does to fix most health problems. Sadly, masking a problem will usually make things worse.
The only way to really fix any health challenge is to fix the root cause. Anything less will usually result in further damage and eventually long-term health problems, and nobody wants that!
Every patient is different, but fasting has a way of helping so many people and their many symptoms that I have come to see it as a viable option for almost all of my patients. Obviously, fasting does not cure every single ailment, but it usually does much to help patients get their health back.
Fasting does take some effort, but your body is worth it. It takes time and energy, but your health is worth it. And it doesnt cost much money, which is always good for the pocketbook.
Whats more, fasting is easy to do! Not eating or delaying eating is easy. No, it might not be all that fun, but when you are armed with a plan and understand how it really does benefit your body, fasting can easily become a part of your normal routine.
