How Australias leading weight-loss scientist, Dr Amanda Sainsbury-Salis of the Garvan Institute, put her theories to the test and lost nearly 30 kilos.
The scentifically based way to lose weight and keep it off forever. Whether youve tried all the diets but find you just keep putting the weight back on - plus extra - or simply want to lose weight and keep it off forever, this is the book for you. Like many women, Dr Amanda Sainsbury-Salis began dieting in her teens despite being a normal weight. Over the next few years she tried all kinds of diets, and six years on her weight had ballooned; she was now obese. I dieted myself fat, Dr Sainsbury-Salis says. Id lose a kilo or two then just gain it all back, plus more. She also fell prey to binge eating, pigging out on pastries in between her dieting attempts. When in despair she finally gave up dieting, she decided to start a career in medical research so that she could find an effective way to lose weight.
Today she is a world leader in the field of weight loss. Through her research, she discovered that the key to successful dieting is to understand how your brain regulates your weight and work with it, rather than against it, by never going hungry. Staying satisfied is the key to beating the famine reaction, your bodys way of protecting itself when you diet from what it perceives as a life-threatening food shortage. Once in tune with your body, its easy to lose weight and keep it off.
Amanda tested out her theories on herself, losing nearly 30 kilograms and keeping it off for more than nine years (and counting), then helped her husband to lose 20 kilograms. Now, in The Dont Go Hungry Diet, Dr Sainsbury-Salis explains the science behind her discoveries simply and effectively, then tells how you, too, can lose weight more effectively and with less effort than ever before. With chapters on how to recognise and deal with a famine reaction and other scientific breakthroughs, as well as on nutrition and exercise, plus 50 delicious recipes, this is a scientifically based plan that is simple for anyone to follow - and that works.

Fasten your seatbelt. Youre about to set off on a journey of discovery about yourself and your body, diets and dieting. Im going to let you in on some startling facts about how the human body works facts that will make it so much easier for you to lose unwanted kilos and keep them off for life. And this is not just theory. Ive lost 28 kilos myself using the principles in this book and have kept that weight off for almost a decade.

If youve ever struggled to lose weight or keep it off, youll have many aha moments as you read this book. Youll experience feelings of great relief and empowerment as you read about the missing link that until now has eluded dieters, the weight loss industry and health professionals alike. You can say goodbye forever to most of the rules and restrictions associated with conventional dieting: to endless weeks of counting kilojoules, fats or carbohydrates; of restricting serving sizes; of avoiding certain foods; of struggling to exert willpower and of nagging, irrepressible hunger. No more will you step hopefully on the scales only to see that, for all your efforts, you havent lost a gram since your last weigh-in. And never again need you fear the prospect of mortifying rebound weight gain.

Im going to show you how to lose weight and keep if off by working with your body, not against it. Youll learn to tune in to your body signals and to eat as much as you need of the foods you crave. Its time to re-experience the unadulterated pleasure of eating unweighed, uncounted and satisfying servings of all foods, including the foods that are forbidden or considered dangerous on many conventional weight loss diets foods such as nuts, dried fruit, avocado, cheese, tuna in olive oil, and roast chicken with the skin on. Youll see that it is possible to lose weight and keep it off by eating real food in genuinely satisfying quantities.

How can I make such a preposterous-sounding statement? Well, I do so from the standpoint of someone with a PhD in molecular science who has spent seventeen years researching the subject of weight loss. Ive conducted many carefully controlled laboratory experiments to help determine why it is that conventional dieting so often fails, and to help unlock the secrets of successful weight loss. Ive presented my findings to doctors, scientists, dietitians and health educators at international conferences in more than sixteen countries. Ive published dozens of articles on my findings about weight regulation in esteemed medical journals. My research has earned me scientific prizes, prestigious scholarships, media coverage and millions of dollars in grants in order to further our understanding of effective weight loss. And from all my research, I can confidently tell you that the best way to lose weight for life is to eat up .

I developed this weight loss strategy partly from what I saw with my own eyes in the laboratory and mostly from my extensive reading of the scientific literature on weight regulation. Over the years, various pieces of the puzzle have become available to scientists specialising in this area, but because the research was complex, the information has not filtered through to the public, or even to health-care professionals and the weight loss industry, in a coherent and accessible way. Having devoted my PhD studies to research into the bodys weight regulatory system, as well as having spent years pondering and testing various ideas on myself and others, I have now pieced together an explanation that is accessible to everyone. As the picture becomes more complete, a growing number of researchers believe that the strategy you are about to learn in this book is the key to weight loss and will form the basis of all effective weight loss programs in the future. The excitement is palpable. When I talk about this weight loss strategy with fellow researchers or health professionals, I often find myself with new collaborators as more and more people put these ideas into practice and delve for deeper understanding. Now you, too, can put these principles into action in your life and see for yourself how much easier they make it for you to lose weight and keep it off.
