Welcome!

Do you feel extremely fatigued and stressed almost every single day? Does it get impossible for you to keep your eyes open and keep working? Do you feel that youre gaining excessive weight even though your eating habits are perfectly healthy?

If your answers to these questions are Yes and you are well aware of what it feels like to live with these conditions every single day, you are going to love this book.

If you or your loved ones are living with hypothyroidism and desperately looking for ways to relieve yourself from this affliction then you are not alone. Millions of Americans are living with hypothyroidism today. In fact, an estimated 20 million people in America alone suffer from thyroid diseases.

And the worst part? About 60% of affected patients are completely unaware of their conditions. Even those who do realize that something is very wrong with their bodies and go to doctors to seek help, are either left misdiagnosed, untreated or treated incorrectly.

With such statistics, the chances of anyones correct diagnosis and treatment is very slim. The reason behind it is the fact that the symptoms and signs for hypothyroidism are very general and can be a cause of aging as well. In fact, these symptoms can be caused due to a myriad of factors! Thats the main reason both patients and doctors often fail to see the underlying severity of such symptoms.

Hence, anyone who has hypothyroidism or wants to know more about this disease needs to do his or her own homework and make sure that hypothyroidism doesnt take over their lives.

They need to know about the specific symptoms, the potential problems that may arise in the future, and possible treatment options. Apart from medical treatments, hypothyroidism can also be healed naturally.

This book is going to delve into exactly that. This book is tailored to answer all your questions about hypothyroidism. It will give you a clear insight into what hypothyroidism is, what its signs and symptoms are, what its risk factors are, and how you can treat yourself naturally. The book is going to explain to you in simple layman terms about hypothyroidism treatments and their side effects, natural cures, lifestyle changes, exercises and foods needed to control hypothyroidism.

So, keep on reading to know how you can also live strong with hypothyroidism.

The Basics of Hypothyroidism

Before we go into the more complicated aspects of hypothyroidism, you first need to have a clear understanding of what exactly Hypothyroidism is. Hence, I am going to start this chapter with the very basics of this health condition.

What is Hypothyroidism?

In your body, in the front lower part of the neck theres a gland called the Thyroid gland. It is very important for your body to function properly. This glands primary purpose is to make thyroid hormones (Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine) and release them into your blood stream to regulate the bodys metabolism and temperature. In every individual theres a minimum level of how much thyroid hormone should be released for the body to function at optimum levels.

However, when your thyroid glands dont make enough thyroid hormone, it creates an array of problems for your body. This phenomenon of not producing enough thyroid hormone is called Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is therefore one type of thyroid disease.

Whats the cause of Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism occurs when the bodys thyroid gland or pituitary gland fails to work properly. Sometimes it can also be due to not being properly stimulated by the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. However, in the US, the most common cause of this medical condition is Hashimotos disease. In this disease, your bodys immune system attacks your own cells, meaning it attacks your thyroid gland which results in inflammation and not being able to produce the necessary thyroid hormones.

Other causes can include radioactive therapy near neck regions, use of certain medications, or too little iodine in the diet. In fact, some individuals are born with under developed thyroid gland and thus have difficulty in producing enough thyroid hormones. Older women aging over 60 are also at higher risks of being affected with Hypothyroidism.

What are the signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism?

The signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism vary depending on the severity of the medical condition. In early stages, the symptoms may be barely noticeable but with time the symptoms turn obvious. Some of the most common symptoms and signs of Hypothyroidism are feeling excessively fatigued even without heavy workload, an increased sensitivity to temperature (especially cold temperature), noticing excessive weight gain without unhealthy eating habits or even after maintaining an active lifestyle.

Other signs include having frequent constipation, dry skin, thinning hair, depression, pain, puffy face, stiffness and swelled joints. Having irregular or extremely heavy periods can also indicate hypothyroidism. Higher levels of blood cholesterol levels in the body, impaired memory or muscle weakness are also potential signs of hypothyroidism.

Even though hypothyroidism is prevalent in middle aged and older women, infants who have thyroid problems can display some sets of signs and symptoms as well. Newborns may have jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes), a larger than usual protruding tongue, poor muscle tone, puffy face and excessive sleeping tendency.

Hypothyroidism diagnosis

In order to diagnose your condition your doctor will have to test your blood. The blood tests are usually done to identify the amount of TSH or thyroxine hormone in the body. If the blood tests show a higher amount of thyroxine hormone in the blood compared to TSH then it indicates hypothyroidism.

With the sensitive TSH test its comparatively easier for doctors to diagnose hypothyroidism now. Moreover, the levels of TSH will also determine the dosage of medication that doctors will prescribe. However, the TSH test alone might not give you a solid evidence of hypothyroidism. Sometimes even though the test for TSH is normal a person still could be suffering from hypothyroidism.

Hence, theres another diagnosis that doctors use. Its known as the T4 testing. This testing tests the levels of free T4 available in your blood stream. A lower level of T4 usually indicate hypothyroidism.

Apart from the T4 tests, doctors can also diagnose using the Anti-Thyroid Microsomal Antibodies Testing. There are some specific antibodies that may attack the thyroid gland, this test is primarily done to check the levels of these specific antibodies. The mere presence of these specific antibodies indicates that there has been thyroid damage. Usually doctors dont readily suggest to do this test but if you believe you are at a risk of having hypothyroidism then you should discuss about all the available diagnosis methods with your doctor.

Now that you have a clear concept about hypothyroidism we can move on to the next chapter where we will discuss why hypothyroidism shouldnt be left untreated. The next chapter will inform you of all the possible complication that may accompany hypothyroidism.
