The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located right under the Adams apple, and its main job is to produce hormones that regulate the metabolism.

Hypothyroidism can be attributed to one main cause lack of iodine in the diet. This is a situation that is very common around the world, more so in developing countries. However, in countries where the diet contains sufficient quantities of iodine, the major cause of hypothyroidism is actually a condition referred to as chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or Hashimotos Thyroiditis. This is an auto-immune disease where your own immune cells attack and destroy your thyroid gland.

There are also other less-common causes of hypothyroidism that you should be aware of. These include pregnancies, problems with certain glands within the brain, thyroid removal surgeries, and trauma to the thyroid gland.
