Introduction
T he Mayo Clinic diet is named for the renowned medical facility established in Rochester, Minnesota in 1864. This diet plan is backed by years of sound research conducted by some of the top dieticians and physicians around the world. You may have heard about variations of the Mayo Clinic Diet circulating around the internet, and you may be confused about which version is right for you. Well in fact, there is a diet that has been officially released by the Mayo Clinic. Wouldnt you like to get your hands on the real Mayo Clinic Diet and reap its benefits? If your answer is yes, then it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to the official Mayo Clinic Diet. It is called a diet, but in a reality, it is a lifestyle. Once youve become accustomed to its requirements, and you see the positive changes it makes in your life, I know that you will never want to go back to yo-yo dieting and fad diets.
But before we start talking about the official Mayo Clinic Diet, lets discuss some of the knock-offs that are tainting the Mayo Clinics name with their sometimes dangerous dieting regimes. One of these fad diets dates back to the 1930s. At the time, it was known as the Hollywood Diet. It promised dieters large amounts of weight loss and the opportunity to be as sleek and slender as a Hollywood movie star.
The Hollywood diet demanded that dieters follow a rigid dietary plan which consisted of daily consumption of grapefruit. They had to eat a breakfast consisting of black coffee and half a grapefruit; lunch consisted of plain tea or coffee, a piece of melba toast, cucumber, one egg and half of a grapefruit; dinner consisted of tea or coffee, half of a head of lettuce with one tomato, two eggs and again, half a grapefruit. Some versions of this Hollywood diet allowed the dieters to eat small portions of fish or meat, but the daily caloric consumption was not allowed to exceed 800. Grapefruit was eaten at every meal because it was thought that the fruit contained enzymes specially formulated for fat burning. Because of the importance placed on grapefruit in this diet, it eventually became known as the grapefruit diet.
Numerous offspring of the Hollywood diet popped up, including one which bore the Mayo Clinic Diet name. Although it was never backed by anyone from the Mayo Clinic health center, the name alone lead dieters to erroneously believe that it was supported by sound scientific analysis. This diet also placed heavy emphasis on grapefruit or unsweetened grapefruit juice. Needless to say, these fad diets were very dangerous for overall health.
These diets continued to grow in popularity, and the Mayo Clinic received many calls from both disgruntled and curious dieters. The Mayo Clinic is one of the most respected medical organizations in the world, and it developed a sound dieting regime to counter the false ones on the market and thereby clear its name. This official Mayo Clinic diet is the one that will be described in this book, and it is the one that is supported by sound scientific evidence and years of research.
The Mayo Clinic itself is a pioneer in the world of medicine and medical research. In fact, it is the largest integrated nonprofit medical group practice in the world and employs more than 3,800 doctors and scientists and over 50,000 allied health staff. It was ranked as number one on the 2014-2015 US News and World Report: List of Best Hospitals and it has been in the top ranks for more than twenty years. The Mayo Clinic spends over $500 million on research alone, and its research scientists and physicians are committed to finding, understanding and curing disease. The Mayo Clinic also provides advice and guidance on the best healthcare practices to medical organizations around the world in order help people live fuller and healthier lives. So, lets have a look at this revolutionary diet plan.
Chapter 1: The Mayo Clinic Diet- The Overview
M any would say that the Mayo Clinic Diet is more of a lifestyle than a diet. This is because it encourages you to replace your bad lifestyle and eating habits with healthier practices. It will not only help you to lose weight but will also help you to lead a more active lifestyle.
The Mayo Clinic diet consists of two stages: the lose it stage, followed by the live it stage. This diet does not have repeating cycles, such as four weeks on, two weeks off; instead, the first stage of the diet lasts for two weeks and the live it stage lasts for a lifetime. True to its name, the lose it stage will help you lose a large amount of weight in a healthy way.
How are you able to lose a large amount of weight? Well, it is during the lost it stage that you are encouraged to completely eliminate five very unhealthy practices from your daily routine. These practices include consuming an excess amount of sugar, consuming too much meat, snacking on foods that are not vegetables and fruits, watching the television while eating, as well as eating at restaurants, if eating out causes you to break any of the above rules.
During the lose it stage, you will replace the bad habits described above with five healthier habits. These new habits include consuming healthy fats such as monounsaturated fats, eating lots of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, eating a good breakfast and including exercise as a part of your regular routine. During the lose it stage, you may choose to adopt five more healthy habits, and you will also start doing some form of exercise every day.
