Introduction
R esearchers and dieticians are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers that wheat poses on the body.
The digestive system is the first thing that is at risk when we put too many wheat products into our body, and when our digestive system is not working properly, the rest of the body starts to be at risk too. The popular book, Wheat Belly by cardiologist, Dr. William Davis took the world by storm in 2011. It put a laser like focus on an issue that many people had completely disregarded. By simply cutting wheat out of your diet, you can alleviate many health concerns. Issues that have been accumulating in the body over the years can be resolved, and you can feel better for the first time in a long time.
Youll feel happier and healthier, and youll lose weight in the process. The results speak for themselves as millions now swear by this new way of living. It only takes a few simple changes, but first you need to know more about what wheat actually does to your body, how your body will benefit from giving it up and how you can start to incorporate a wheat free diet into your life. In this book we discuss: The Problem with Wheat The Health Benefits of a Wheat-Free Diet GlutenFree Eating The Wheat Belly Diet Twenty Tips and Tricks Delicious Wheat-Free Recipes However, before we begin, lets take a little look at Dr. William Davis, the man behind the Wheat Belly book, and why he is so strong in his faith in a wheat-free diet. As a cardiologist, Dr.
Davis was constantly surrounded by people suffering from heart problems and other chronic diseases. He became increasingly aware of the importance of good health for both the body and the mind. After attending a talk by a fellow doctor, he realized that people should live a low-fat diet and curtail eating meat. So, he took away all meat products and vegetable oils from his diet and instead replaced them with whole grains. He also took up running and looked forward to seeing positive results. To his surprise, he became diabetic, his cholesterol levels increased and he gained a considerable amount of weight.
He knew that something was not adding up. He realized that the biggest difference in his diet was all the added grains. So, he decided to cut them out completely to see what an affect this would have on his body. Once again he was surprised. He found that he started looking and feeling better, his cholesterol levels dropped, his blood sugar went back to a normal level and he lost all the weight that he had put on plus more. He felt better than he had in a very long time.
This experience changed the way he had thought about food. After undertaking additional research and continuing with this new lifestyle, he knew he had figured out the reason his body was constantly fighting itself. It was wheat. After coming to this realization, he took his experiences and applied them to his patients, encouraging them to try his new way of living. The results were spectacular. Each patient was able to improve the condition of their health on a daily basis.
He knew that he would never go back to the way he was before and that he would be promoting this way of life to his patients and to others for the rest of his life. That is why he decided to write Wheat Belly , so that he could show others a way of life that could literally transform them from unhealthy to healthy in a rather short amount of time. Lets begin on our journey towards a happier and healthier lifestyle the wheat-free way.
Chapter 1: The Problem with Wheat
I m sure youve heard a lot about wheat lately, and youve also probably seen many people start a wheat-free diet. Im sure by now youre wondering if this new way of eating is just a fad, or whether or not it is something that is as life changing as everyone says it. Its certainly not a fad.
The reason it is becoming so popular is because people are finally starting to see wheat for what it really is and the truth is finally starting to spread. So what exactly is the problem with wheat and why is it wreaking such havoc on our bodies? The biggest issue with wheat is not what it is but rather what it has become. Wheat, a cereal grain, was once a natural product. However, because the need for it was growing, food scientists looked for ways to yield more wheat faster. Instead of wheat growing in normal quantities and at a normal speed, wheat is now produced at a fast and furious pace. The bigger they can grow the wheat and the faster that they can get it, the better.
What this boils down to is the unnerving fact that the wheat we are now eating has been genetically modified, leaving it unnatural and unhealthy. This unnatural ingredient is now causing endless health issues, and because we have become accustomed to eating it on a daily basis, it has become difficult to eliminate. Lets take a quick look at some common food products which include wheat as an ingredient: White bread Whole wheat bread Rye bread (that contains wheat flour) Pizza Pasta Biscuits Flours, including plain, whole wheat and self-raising Most cereals Most cake, chocolates, pastries and desserts Couscous Semolina Some hot drinks including Milo and Ovaltine Soy sauce Most baking powders Scones Crackers Crumbed or battered foods Gravy Ice cream cones Most powdered and canned soups Most fast foods This list contains some common foods you may eat on a daily basis, however there are unfortunately many more in which wheat may be present. Please be aware that reading labels is one of the most important things to do when shopping. It is now compulsory for all foods to include a full list of ingredients so if you are unsure if someone contains wheat, always check the labels for more information. By now Im sure you are thinking, but what can I eat? Dont worry, well go through that in a bit more detail later on, and youll see that eating wheat-free is certainly not impossible.
