As a child and teen therapist and the author of 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child, I have repeatedly seen many cases where a drawing activity has transformed big, surging negative emotions into more manageable feelings. So, when my publisher, Hachette Book Group, asked me if Id be interested in writing this Foreword to Half Hour of Pencil Power, I immediately said, Yes. Knowing this book provides a series of fun, how-to drawing activities that many children and teens would value, I was very pleased to learn what it was all about.
Truth be told, I have always personally struggled to draw anything outside of a circle or a square. Okay, if you must know, I can draw some pretty good stick figures! Realizing Im not an art therapist and not seeing myself as artistic by any stretch, I subsequently felt some anxiety about how I could best write this foreworduntil I reviewed all the wonderful offerings in this book.
In Half Hour of Pencil Power, Mark Kistler has created a series of wonderful, rewarding, and easy (even for me) drawing activities that can help children, teens, and families connect to their inner selves as well as to one another. Kistler writes that the creative outlet of learning how to draw builds a childs critical thinking skills while nourishing self-esteem. I couldnt agree more!
Besides the allure of doing these wonderful drawing activities that Mark created, I found myself drawn to his colorful background descriptions whereby he introduces these fun exercises: from his being inspired by the content of a dream (Lesson 1: Mouse Hole), or the movie Toy Story (Lesson 2: Window of Wonder), or visiting the Taj Mahal (Lesson 4: Humpty Dumpty), or art classes in Brazil (Lesson 5: Space Kitty), or his guest lecture in the United Arab Emirates (Lesson 24: Flying Mummy), or the movie
