Meet the authors
Julie Adams has personal experience of living with a sibling with severe learning disabilities, which led to her starting her social work career in residential care in 1992, working in a respite setting for children with disabilities. After qualifying in 1999 she then moved into field social work, and has worked in a variety of settings, including child protection, adoption and looked-after children. Julie has worked as a team manager in Children with Disability Teams, and also in a hospital setting with adults with complex health needs and learning disabilities. Julie is a qualified practice educator and also delivers training; she co-wrote Positive Social Work: The Essential Toolkit For NQSWs.
Diana Leshone began working with children and families in 1989, starting in a Family Centre in partnership with Save the Children and the local authority. Her work includes assessments, direct work with children, crisis response, court work, behaviour management, including developing and delivering courses, parenting skills and disabilities. Diana has managed a Resource Centre and a Childrens Centre while continuing to have childrens needs in focus. She qualified as a social worker in 2009 and joined a childrens disability team, progressing to senior social worker. Diana has delivered training with Julie and is continually looking to share her practice wisdom with others in this field.

Introduction
Thank you for choosing Active Social Work with Children with Disabilities. We hope this book will help you enhance your learning and understanding, and dispel any fears you may have about entering this most wonderful and rewarding area of social work practice. Our main target audience is those who are working as social workers, particularly students, those who are newly qualified, or social workers who have not worked with children with disabilities before. Throughout the book, and then in one specially dedicated chapter, there are many activities that can be completed by social workers and practice educators with their students on placement, or within supervision and/or team meetings to support with Continued Professional Development (CPD). The exercises are also suitable for those social workers undertaking training on their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) to help evidence their learning and reflective practice on each activity.
