    INTRODUCTION

Marijuana is the most common and controversial plant in the world today. While some people are crying out for tougher drug regulations and draconian punishments for consumers and sellers, others call for legal frameworks that allow non-violent pot-smokers.

U.S. citizens of all ages and social classes use it. In general, a greater understanding of marijuana's past uses and risks will allow communities to develop more effective and inclusive policies to control marijuana.

Marijuana has been used worldwide for thousands of years, like many other mind-altering drugs. Old Chinese texts describe their use in recreational as well as medical environments.

Archaeological evidence indicates that the marijuana plant spread from Asia to Africa and flourished in Europe in the sixth hundred A.D. A century later, colonial Americans cultivated marijuana for their use in textiles as a cash crop.

Marijuana is native to central and southern Asia, and there is plenty of evidence of its use by Aryans, Assyrians, and Hindus in Asia. The United Nations reports that about 4% of the world's population uses marijuana, and about 23 million use marijuana every day. This is potentially the world's most-used illegal drug.

American physicians routinely prescribed marijuana for relief of pain, nausea, and arthritis between 1850 and 1942. Marijuana was also used most of this time, recreationally-and lawfully. Before 1935 and the Universal State Narcotic Drug Act was enacted, some states started regulating drugs strictly.

Marijuana was regarded predominantly as a revolutionary, countercultural, or "hippie" remedy in the 1950s/60s. But it also did not bear the taboos or draconian legal sanctions occurring today.

These legislative decisions have remained contentious to this day, and reform proponents claim that marijuana is not so harmful or addictive that such stringent legal penalties would be appropriate. They also frequently support the decriminalization of marijuana, especially for medical purposes.

Regardless of the difference in opinion on the legality or societal acceptance of marijuana, most would agree that it is a significant issue for people convicted of a non-violent drug crime. U.S. jails are full of millions of such convicts, and Congress spends billions of dollars keeping them locked.

Marijuana is a common name for the psychoactive genetic form of Sativa marijuana. For over a thousand years in Central Asia, it has been smoked in America for over a century and has been widely used during counterculture in the 1960s and has been the most commonly consumed illegal drug in America ever since.

The strength and influence of genetic modification and growing conditions have evolved dramatically (hydroponics), and today, marijuana is 15 times stronger than that of the 1960s and 70s.

This drastic increase in control has nullified our perception of the effects of the drug. Any study made on the toxicity and harm of the drug in the past decade does not accurately reflect the reality of marijuana today.

Even in the medical community, medical marijuana remains a contentious issue. While some public health organizations have advocated for its use, the AMA and the FDA are most notably opposed to its approval.

Marijuana is made from a plant that is called Sativa marijuana or Indica marijuana. This plant is also named Indian marijuana. Marijuana is the name given to the smoking parts of the plant. The inflorescence of the plant is typically smoked because it has the highest concentration of poisonous agents. The resin produced from this plant's flowers is called hashish or hash.

Marijuana's primary chemical agent is tetrahydrocannabinol. Yet marijuana smoke contains more than 400 different substances, including 66 other associated cannabinoids. Cannabinoids function via two receptors called CB1 and CB2 on the central nervous system.

These receptors are found throughout the central nervous system, and their activity stimulates the mesocorticolimbic pathways in the brain, which constitutes the source of medication reward.

Marijuana's main effects include euphoria, altered sensory perception, heart rate changes, pupil widening, red eyes, dry mouth, and anxiety. The minimum starting dose is 10 micrograms per kg of body weight.

Though marijuana has been used for thousands of years, the effects of chronic use of marijuana are not well understood. Smoking is one of the most dangerous types of marijuana use because smoke contains many carcinogenic substances and tar. Vaporizers are very effective in eliminating these hazardous chemicals.
