About Our Authors

DR. MARYANN GROMOLL, who fully updated and revised this second edition for REA, has nearly four decades of experience in the field of exceptional education. Her insights draw upon her background as a schoolteacher in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida. Dr. Gromoll is an Associate Professor at the Daytona State College Educator Preparation Institute, where she prepares majors in exceptional student education as well as elementary and secondary education to become teachers. Dr. Gromoll has presented at the Florida Council of Exceptional Children Conference, the DSC Academic Excellence Symposium, and the Florida Association of Teacher Education Conference. She earned her Ed. D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Florida. She also has an M.Ed. in Special Education from Temple University and a B.S. in Special Education from Bloomsburg State University.

DR. KEN SPRINGER, a developmental psychologist, is an Associate Professor and Chair of the schools Department of Learning and Teaching at the Simmons School of Education at Southern Methodist University. He teaches graduate classes in research methods, statistics, and program evaluation. His research focuses on academic achievement of students from economically disadvantaged environments. He is the author or co-author of a number of test preparation books. Dr. Springer works with several nonprofit organizations dedicated to serving families and children, and, through pro bono grant writing, has raised more than $1 million on their behalf. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University.

DR. NANCY TATNER, a Florida educator for over 30 years, is an Associate Professor at Daytona State College where she supervises teacher candidates field experience. She has taught kindergarten, and fourth and fifth grade, as well as serving as an interim principal for a private K-8 school named a Blue Ribbon School during her tenure. A recipient of the Junior Achievement of Central Florida Golden Service Learning Partner award, her mission at Daytona State is to arm teacher candidates with the knowledge and skills to be effective, passionate classroom leaders. Dr. Tattner earned her B.A. at Loyola College (now Concordia University) in Montreal. She earned her Diploma in Education from McGill University and a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She received her Ed. D. from the University of Central Florida.
