Dedication
I would like to dedicate this edition of Veterinary Dentistry: A Team Approach , to the founders of modern veterinary dentistry: Drs. Peter Emily, Donald Ross, and. Keith Grove.
Dr. Emily received his Doctor of Dental Surgery at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, and his Certificate of Periodontology from the University of Pennsylvania in the 1960s. He started working in association with veterinarians on many species of animals shortly thereafter. While I had trained by another group of specialist dentists, I credit Peter with stimulating me to spread my knowledge when he stated over lunch, You know, you really should start lecturing and writing.
Dr. Ross, began his career in veterinary medicine with the U.S. Air Force in 1967 during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the Military Working Dog Hospital and performed dental procedures on military dogs for 3 years. He developed his dental skills by working with the base endodontist. Once out of the military, he earned his masters degree in dentistry in 1972 and subsequently started giving lectures in veterinary dentistry. He was always available by telephone and contributed to my knowledge.
Dr. Grove was board certified as both a human and veterinary dentist, having earned his DDS degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Dentistry in 1972 and later achieving diplomate status with both the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) and the American Board of Periodontology. He presented me with the idea of having dental labs at the Veterinary Dental Forum when I was program chair for the second Veterinary Dental Forum. This has grown to become a very popular source of veterinary dental education.
Of course, there were others in the early stages that joined together to form critical mass that I feel I should recognize. It was a group effort to get veterinary dentistry to where it is now. The organizing committee for the AVDC also included Drs. Peter Emily, Donald Ross, Keith Grove,. Gary Beard, Benjamin Colmery, Colin Harvey, Sandy Manfra,. Thomas Mulligan, and Charles Williams. The first 10 presidents of the AVDC were Drs. Charles Williams, Colin Harvey, Keith Grove, Steven Holmstrom, Edward Eisner, Robert Wiggs, Gregg DuPont, Kenneth Capron, Barbara Stapleton, and Michael Peak.
Without these dedicated veterinary dentists, our profession would be nowhere near where it is today.

Preface
Veterinary Dentistry: A Team Approach was written with the entire general veterinary practice in mind. It is comprehensive, bringing a practical, working knowledge in veterinary dentistry to the student, veterinary assistant, receptionist, technician, and veterinarian. The collaboration of the team is vital to the expansion of services and the completion of many dental-related tasks, resulting in increasing related productivity of the laboratory, anesthesia, radiology, dentistry, hospitalization, pharmacy, and retail departments.
This edition includes an outline at the beginning of each chapter to give the reader an overview of the chapter contents. Key points and key terms are listed and should be reviewed before and after reading the chapter to ensure that the chapter is understood. Worksheets are provided at the end of each chapter to help the reader retain key information and improve skill competency. The worksheet answers appear in a section at the back of the text. The reader will also find an appendix containing a list of abbreviations. Although this list was current when the text was published, the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) Nomenclature Committee is continuing to revise this list. Those studying for Board examinations are urged to visit the AVDCs website (www.avdc.org) for the most current list. There is also an appendix that includes lists of various veterinary dental equipment and one with AVDC-approved definitions. The reader will also find a bibliography and a glossary.
I would like to thank all of the technicians with whom I have had the pleasure to work with in my veterinary dental practice: Jan Yarslov, Gina Gros de Mange, Karen Thomson, Loretto Jaca, Melinda Pyle, Lilian Brown, and Lee Figard, as well as practice manager Stacey Neubert. Thanks to Danielle Frazier at Elsevier for her contributions to making this a useful text.
