The Top 10 Things to Consider when Choosing a Name for Your Baby
How popular is the name? You may love Jacob or Isabella, but on the first day of school, your child may be one of five
other Jacobs or Isabellas. Odd spellings of popular names are, well, just odd spellings. Chances are Jakob and Izabellah will have to forever correct people from misspelling their names.
Be mindful of nicknames. Your daughter Natalie might wind up becoming Natty, and your son James, Jimbo. Beware of names that rhyme with something strange (for example, a pretty name like June rhymes with goon and baboon) or that rhyme with your last name, like Mark Clark or Toni Baroni. Pair it up with your last name and see how it sounds. Chantal Moreau rolls of the tongue a lot more smoothly than Chantal Berkowitz. Avoid names that might prompt teasing from other kids.
Luna (meaning moon) is lovely but can sound like Looney to a bully. Honor your heritage, but also honor your child. While youre proud of your cultural or family roots, an American-born child named Ionut Pupazon may be picked on. Note those initials. Samantha Emily Xavier and Patrick Ian Granville will become S.E.X. on a monogrammed sweater. on a monogrammed sweater.
