acknowledgments
Many thanks to Everything Series editor Kate Burgo for her ever-cheerful and accommodating assistance and input. Special thanks to the following for their suggestions and name lists: Judy Frohman, Brenda Knight, Eve Marx, Leon Lewandowski, and Constance Stellas. A nod to my son, Colin Spencer Clark (whose name I'm still happy with after seventeen years), who never failed to amuse me during the writing process with his continual queries of What are you doing? Last, but not least, a big hug to Stuart H. for his support and computer neck relief. or Emily W. or, even worse, little Jacob or chubby Emily.

Others will almost always spell Soozyn as the more conventional Susan.

  • Be mindful of nicknames. Your daughter Isabella might wind up becoming Izzy and your son Leonardo, Nardo.
  • Beware of names that rhyme with something strange (for example, a pretty name like June rhymes with goon and baboon) or that rhyme with your last name, like Mark Clark or Toni Baroni.
  • Pair it up with your last name and see how it sounds. Chantal Levesque rolls off the tongue a lot more smoothly than Chantal Berkowitz.
  • Avoid names that might prompt teasing from other kids. Luna (meaning moon) is lovely, but can sound like Looney to a bully.
  • Honor your heritage but also honor your child. While you're proud of your cultural and ethnic roots, an American-born child named Ionut Pupazon may be chuckled at among peers.
