Praise for Breathing Life Into Your Characters
Breathing Life Into Your Characters is a comprehensive and incisive look at creating characters whose words, deeds, actions/reactions, and feelings will leap off the page, leaving an indelible, believable, and memorable impression! Kudos to Rachel Doc Hollywood Ballon! Kathie Fong Yoneda, Paramount Pictures story analyst/development specialist and author of The Script Selling Game
Better than anyone I know, Rachel Ballon understands the confluence of good character writing and psychology. Its a good thing for the mental health of writers and audiences that shes set down her insights about how awareness of the inner, personal drama really does breathe life into fictional characters.
Writers simply cant write beyond the limits of their own psychological growth, but this book shows them how to break through by tapping the power of their emotions. It gives them the courage to dig deeper in their writing and make it more honest and psychologically solid. Chris Vogler, screenwriter and author of The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers
Creating compelling characters is the key to writing a novel that readers care about or a screenplay that attracts the stars who get movies made. In this profoundly insightful exploration of the psychology of fictional characters, Rachel Ballon clearly explains how to do just that. But she goes one important step further by showing writers how to explore their own psychology and apply that to the characters who are so much a part of themselves.
Pamela Wallace, Academy Award-winning screenwriter for Witness and author of more than twenty-four novels
Breathing Life Into Your Characters is a writers gold mine. Writers who read this book, study it, and do the exercises will tap deeply into their ability to create emotionally deeper, more realistic, compelling characters. Dr. Ballon has written a remarkable and necessary book that will nurture all writers. Dr. Linda Seger, author of Creating Unforgettable Characters and Advanced Screenwriting

Acknowledgments
Writing a book is giving birth to an entity that never existed. It is first conceived with an idea and then nurtured along the way with support, encouragement, and love. Special recognition must be given to those people who provided their support, encouragement, and love. The passion for this book was first borne when I taught a one-day workshop called Beneath the Mask: Creating Characters From the Inside Out and saw firsthand how valuable it can be for writers to go inside themselves to mine the gems of their creativity. Thank you to Linda Venis, head of the highly-esteemed extension UCLA Writers Program who gave me this opportunity to share my vision with thousands of writers throughout the years.
A chance conversation with Jack Heffron at Writers Digest Books gave me this opportunity to take my vision and make it a reality. He and I are of like minds, and his enthusiasm for the subject of creating characters from the inside was contagious and validated my vision. I will be forever grateful to him for his huge contribution to starting the process.
My appreciation and thanks go to my editor, Kelly Nickell. Her notes, suggestions, and knowledge vastly contributed to the final results of the book. Thanks to Meg Leder, who did a comprehensive job as copy editor.
Without the love of both family and friends, giving birth to a book would be a lonely process. Luckily, I wasnt alone. A loving thankyou to my husband, Bill. I am forever grateful for his constant belief in the importance of the material and for his willingness to listen to new ideas. A big thank-you to my children Marc, Amy, and John for their support and love, and also the invaluable writing suggestions from my writer sons, Marc and John. Love and hugs to wonderful Brittany and Bradley for being just the way you are. And thanks to Robin for her interest.
A grateful thank-you to my sister and brother, Linda and Howard Mann, for their generosity and love, and especially for the R & R in Hawaii. Thanks to my nephew Josh Mann, a talented actor, who shared some of his favorite books with me as resources. And to my nephew Matt Mann, for being you.
A heartfelt thank-you also goes to Martine Ehrenclou, a beautiful writer and friend who was always available with encouragement and support. I am grateful for the time you spent helping me find a few of the perfect excerpts for this book.
To Brenda Krantz, a dear friend, collaborator, and wonderful play-wright, I thank you for your belief and enthusiasm from the very first time I told you about the book it was energizing.
I am most appreciative to Joan Dasteel for always being there with her support. Thank you for teaching me how to receive your kindness.
