When a reader picks up your book, you have about two pages to get them to care about your story.

If its an e-book sample, that shrinks down to a couple of paragraphs. While theyre reading, theres one question in their mind. That question is...

Why should I care?

Harsh, right? But thats the reality of things. You have to hook your reader within those first two pages, and the quickest way to do that is to create compelling, relatable, and memorable characters.

1 Compelling characters that evoke interest and draw the reader into the world youve created.

2 Relatable characters who are flawed and vulnerable in ways that the reader can either see in themselves or in people that they know.

3 Memorable characters stay with your reader long after they close the book.

How do you make all of this happen?

Youthe authorneed to fall in love with your character first. You do that by learning everything there is to know about them.

Who am I?

I'm Tasha L. Harrison and I write what I like to call filthy fiction.

I have authored eight titles to include three series The Lust Diaries and The Truth Duet and A Taste of Her Own Medicine, the first in my Small Town Romance series which was born from the #20kin5days challenge. Sexy times and happily ever afters are my jam and my ultimate dream is to make and edit words full time. If youre looking for romance novels that feature people of color and tackle subjects like police brutality, gentrification, poverty, being othered, feminism with intense intimacy and hot sex scenesIm your girl!

You want a story about a social justice warrior who falls in love with a cop?

#Ialreadywrotethat.

I dont always dig that deep, but one thing you can always expect from me is a meaty story with lots of love, sexy times and unforgettable characters.

And because I like to obsess about the things I love

I also run a highly motivated group full of writing ass writers called The Wordmaker Writing Community. If this sounds like something you're interested in. Join us!

But first things first

I, Poppa, freaks all the honeys

(don't look at me like that. Its impossible not to think of that song after "first things first)

This is not a book where I claim to know more about the art of storytelling than anyone else. OutKast already did that and they can rhyme, so Imma leave that to them. The only thing I do have over you is that I have read a shit-ton of books on craft and edited a quite a few romances. That has given me the knowledge one needs me Frankenstein a process together that might be universally useful.

This is my process. Its what works for me. I hope it works for you, in part or the whole, but this is not the Holy Grail, or a blueprint for writing the next Great American Novel. But it might just be a collection of random scribble scrabble that helps your write a damn good one.

Are you ready to get started?

Five Stages of Novel Writing
  1. Brainstorming- this is the ideation stage where you scribble down notes, dream up your characters, and decide if the story has legs or not.
  2. Prewriting- this is the outlining and character development stage that involves sketching out scenes, developing back story, and mapping out some of the big plot points in your story.
  3. First draft- the word vomit that falls out of your head. This is when you just focus on getting the story down.
  4. Second draft- your first read through where you refine your plot, check your continuity, layer in details that will enrich your story and just generally make it better.
  5. Editing- This is where you seek out a professional to cut out the fluff, polish, and buff that book to a gorgeous shine!

If youre a panster, no worries! You can use these character development tools when you dive into your second draft to make sure your characters remain consistent from Chapter One to the The End. Remember, this is my process, but you can always use what you need and throw away the rest!

Before We Get Started

Here's a pro-tip for you:

If you have the physical version of this book, mark up it up.

If you had the ebook copy, grab a notebook and a pen so that you can complete the exercises as you go.

You think you dont need to do this. I know. I might be one of a few analog girls in this digital world, but I know that everyone wants to store everything in the cloud. I get it and I understand, but I really? I dont care. This is my process, remember? And this is the way I do things. Old school. In the lab with a pen and a pad, as Dr. Dre once said.

Why?

Well, mostly because The Basic Character Creation Workbook is a workbook. Youre meant to do the actual work and for me, that translates into writing things longhand.

Not good enough?

Okay, here are two really good reasons. After I give you these, Im almost positive you will find your favorite pen and the nearest Target, Barnes & Noble or fancy stationery store to grab up a few Moleskines, Leuchtturm 1927s, or my personal preference, a regular ole marble backed, college-ruled, composition notebook, every time you sit down to plot a book.

Youll learn more, learn faster, and remember almost everything you write down

Honestly. Truly. This is not a joke or fake news. The areas of the brain associated with learning work far better when you use pen and paper. To add to that, writing things down, making checklists, or keeping a day planner make it far more likely that youll remember the things you need and want to remember. Studies have been done on this so you dont have to take my word for it. Make your google work.

You wont be distracted

Staying focused on the task at hand is difficult in this day and age, but its damn near impossible when you have so many distractions right at your fingertips. Taking your work off the laptop and into your novel notebook will keep you focused and thinking clearly. I have taken it one step further and have gone back to writing my first draft in my novel notebook. I've found that it makes it easier to write a much cleaner second draft.

Create your characters
with the basic bio

Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that character development is my jimmy-jam.

I can spend hours nerding out about all the details that go into crafting memorable and compulsively readable characters.

So lets talk about characters and the basic ingredients we need to make them compelling.

On more than one occasion I may have mentioned that characters are the vehicle for the plot. If you cant get your readers to care about your characters, they wont care about what happens to them.

All characters should be:

relatable,

believable

consistent

You want your reader to feel invested in what happens to your characterwhether those feelings are positive or negative. They should want to see them succeed or, if theyre deserving, fail and redeem themselves. There are a lot of ways to achieve this, but the one that Ive found most effective is a super detailed character sketches. The Basic Bio that I created, Goal, Motivation, Conflict by Debra Dixon, how to use backstory effectively and the three types of character arcs. This in depth character sketches has helped me maintain consistency throughout my novels and series and it has also allowed me to deepen my understanding of the characters Ive created, and enrich them unique ways. And now I want to share those ways with you!

Im calling this bio basic when its really anything but. The basic bio is the perfect place to start building your character. Starting with appearance and ending with personality quirks and questions about what makes your character tick, this may be the only thing you need to make your character less of a Mary Sue.

But before we dive into this exhaustive character worksheet, lets talk about the five basic characters that every story needs.
