Acknowledgments

This book has been years in the making and would not have been possible without the help and support of a few key people in my life. Thank you to Mary Beth Ryan-Maher, Dr. Lise Alschuler, Kathleen Feeney, Dr. Lyn Patrick, Dr. Joni Olehausen, Chris Tomasino, Bill Gotlieb, Dr. Dan Carter, Brendan Mahoney, Dr. Kimberly Windstar-Hamlin, Dr. Jane Guiltinan, Dr. Peter D'Adamo, Dr. Chris Meletis, and Kate Williams.

Thank you to everyone at Smart Publications and Health Freedom Nutrition for working hard to make this project come to life, especially John Morgenthaler, Dale Fowkes, Ed Kinon, and Neal Ratchford.

To Dr. Walter J Crinnion for whose willingness to share his vast knowledge and experience I am so grateful. He is truly the 'father' of naturopathic environmental medicine.

I especially want to acknowledge my mentor, colleague, and friend, Dr. Tori Hudson. She taught me everything I know about being a naturopathic physician and, specifically, women's health. She embodies the principle of 'doctor as teacher' and continues to work tirelessly to pass onto others her extensive knowledge of women's health.

A very special thank you goes to my mother and father for all of their love and support over the years. I will never forget the night I was living in Chicago and my father called me from Omaha to say he had just watched a TV show about alternative medicine. He told me it was going to be the medicine of the future, and that I was making the right decision to go back to school to become a naturopathic physician. He said, "Marianne, work hard and have tunnel visiontunnel vision."

Finally, to Margie; thank you for putting up with years of "doctor talk" and for all the love, encouragement and support that you have provided. I am so grateful that God put you in my life. I am truly blessed.

Foreword

Dr. Marchese does a wonderful job in 8 Weeks to Women's Wellness to present vitally important information which will help women regain and retain their health and vitality. The unfortunate fact is that we are all carrying a body burden of chemical toxins that we acquire, first from our time inside of mom, and then from the air, food and water we intake. This burden is growing greater with each year and each new generation, and is associated with many serious health problems. Many of the health problems that are caused by these compounds are generally thought of as consequences of aging. But, in reality, the majority of these problems are from the addition of more toxins to our body, rather than adding more years to our age.

Dr. Marchese reviews the classic avenues of toxin exposure so that the reader can more easily avoid building up their burden. Since having a body full of toxins ends up costing all of us a lot of money (medical bills and the cost of cleansing), it makes perfect sense to avoid, as much as possible, contributing to that toxin load. With the information that Dr. Marchese provides on how these exposures occur, it becomes much easier to keep our load from building. She goes on to review the specific health problems that have been linked to toxic burden in the medical and scientific literature. While many people typically only associate cancers, such as breast and ovarian cancers, to pesticide exposure, a great many other health problems are toxin related, as well.

The classic presentations of toxin overload include fatigue, "brain fog", fibromyalgia, thyroid problems, depression and chemical sensitivity (any adverse physical, mental or emotional symptoms after breathing a chemical fume). But many women can experience a host of other illnesses that are toxin-related including: infertility, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, miscarriage, osteoporosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome. By reviewing this section in 8 Weeks to Women's Wellness , many women will finally be given the answer to their questions of "Why am I ill?", and more importantly, "What can I do about it?".

But, Dr. Marchese doesn't stop there. She then takes the reader on a journey of discovery and healing. Discovering the types of toxins that are in one's body and reviewing the currently available tests for these compounds is vitally important to begin the healing process. It is very important to note here that the standard allopathic physicians, as wonderful as they are, do not receive ANY TRAINING in this area. In fact, the training that is available in the area of toxicity is based upon industrial hygiene standards (i.e. What is the level of workplace toxins that can be in the blood without the person being incapacitated?). So, you may want to buy an extra copy of 8 Weeks to Women's Wellness to give to your favorite allopathic physician! She or he may end up learning a lot of valuable information.
