Introduction

Chess is the perfect game to exercise your mind. It helps increase concentration and develop crucial cognitive abilities, such as strategic planning, pattern recognition, and critical thinking.

Also, learning the art of playing chess enhances your focus and ability to analyze situations more effectively and rationally and learn how to eliminate distractions.

It is a very self-motivating exercise, and for the last 20 years, it has been my favorite board game. I've been reading, exercising until late at night, playing against all kinds of opponents, and I still find so much happiness and satisfaction in every single win.

This is why I've decided to share the most important information about this beautiful game with you, hoping to help you start a journey as meaningful as mine.

The great acceptance of my first book, "Chess Openings for Beginners" made me realize that so many people worldwide are willing to learn and understand how to play chess. With this second publication, I want to disclose the essential strategies, tactics, and techniques to play all the different game stages effectively.

And, once again, I will do it in a very easy way... because all of us can become great (well, at least good) chess players and enjoy this timeless game. And if you feel anxious about getting started, thinking chess is a game for exceptionally smart people only, please trust me when I say that this is not true. Reading different kinds of publications and (even more important!) practicing, you can become an expert too.

So, find some time to dedicate to yourself and, with this book in your hands, get ready to discover the most important secrets of the chessboard.

Playing chess is a life-changing experience, and I am honored you have decided to share it with me.

So, shall we begin?

The history of Chess

First of all, let's briefly talk about the history of the game.

Because you might have just discovered it (maybe watching a Netflix show?), but chess dates back more than 1500 years. It is believed to have originated in India in the 6th century AD, even though some historians consider its origins more likely to go back to China.

To this day, most of the evidence points to the fact that chess started in India, where it was called "Chaturanga," a word that translates from the four military divisions: cavalry, chariotry, infantry, and elephantry.

These same forms have evolved into the well-known pieces knight, rook, pawn, and bishop in modern chess.

The Chaturanga game later spread to Persia, the Muslim world, and finally reached Southern European countries.

In the 15th century, modern chess started evolving in Europe: this period was generally referred to as the "Romantic Chess Era."

In the 1800s, winning the game wasn't the most crucial thing: the style was what really mattered. This is why in this century the game was characterized by clever combinations of moves, a daredevil attitude, and bold sacrifices. Long-term strategies weren't that important compared to creativity.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the "Dynamism Era" started, and chess became a part of tournaments and championships, celebrating the very first World Chess Championship in 1886.

In the 20th century, a chess federation was finally established, setting standard chess rules. FIDE (The International Chess Federation or World Chess Federation) is an international organization based in Switzerland that connects the different national chess federations and acts as the governing body of international chess competitions. It was officially founded in Paris on July 20, 1924.

In 1999, The International Chess Federation or World Chess Federation was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Beginning from the following century, the popularity of chess skyrocketed all over the globe.

And as they say... the rest is history.

Glossary of Chess Terms

As a beginner, the "language" of chess is one of the first thing you will need to learn to understand moves and strategies appropriately. So let me introduce you to the words you will always have to keep in mind. And don't forget to come back to these pages every time you find, in this book or in other publications, a term that you don't seem to remember.

My personal suggestion at the moment? Read the following terms once, but dont go crazy trying to memorize them immediately. Go on with the rest of the book, where you will find most of these expressions, and then reread them at the end, when everything will sound familiar and will make much more sense to you.

Activity: it defines the mobility of chess pieces or the freedom of movement. The active pieces have a better option of positively influencing the game's result than the inactive ones (blocked pieces, for example).

Advantage : It is typically based on piece positions on the chessboard and determines the potential of a certain color to win the game. When it looks like one color (or side) is ahead, then that side is said to have an advantage. A clear advantage should be enough to win if correctly played, while a slight advantage simply provides improved practical chances. When judging an advantage, complex criteria are taken into account: for example, the king's safety (one side's king is safer compared to the other one), activity (the enhanced influence of pieces), space (more room for maneuvering), material (more pawns or pieces), or other significant weaknesses.
