The History of Chess

The history of this game is a fascinating one and had a deep transformation over the years, it is seldom known how this game originally started.

  • Chaturanga: The game of Chess had its roots in an ancient game introduced during the time of the Guptas rule in India around 1,500 years ago. The modern idea of Chess born in 6 th century, the ancestor game was called Chaturanga (which mean four parts) and was played on an uncheckered 8x8 board called Ashtpada. The whole idea was to wonder the opponents king Chaturanga has many common aspects with the modern game of Chess but the rules vary from that of modern-day chess. Chaturanga may be played through 4 players simultaneously. "Ships" and "carriages" have been concerned, and the cube was used. One player did no longer start the in shape with an equal number of portions as present-day chess

The term Chaturanga comes from the military world, indeed, there were four divisions: cavalry, infantry, chariots, and elephantry represented by game pieces that later will evolve into knight (cavalry), bishop (elephantry), pawn (infantry), and rook (chariotry).

The rules where different from the modern one: in Chaturanga, the kings are placed diagonally opposite each other on the board, unlike being placed facing each other in modern chess.

In Chaturanga, the game ends when one player eliminates all the pieces of their opponent, except the king. Another difference is that in Chaturanga, if a stalemate is reached, the player who is stalemated is declared the winner. These are two significant variations from modern chess. In modern-day chess, a stalemate results in a draw and not an outright win for either player.
