Introduction

P laying chess well requires being able to predict an opponents moves several turns ahead, to visualize the board and the possible moves in a configuration that you cant yet see and to hold in your mind patterns, potentials and changes without the aid of visual cues. To a certain degree, one can learn chess by memorizing standard openings, end games, gambits and variations on all of these, but the possibilities in chess are almost endless and eventually, it becomes necessary to go beyond the already tried ones, using only the power of your mind.

If you cannot get your own physical chessboard immediately, another good way to practice what you have learned is to download a chess game on your mobile phone. There are many free mobile chess games you can download and start playing immediately. Just visit the app store for your mobile operating system, type chess into the search bar and download one of the games that will pop up in the search results. Make sure you read reviews before choosing the one to download.

Some online games will allow you to pair with another player online. Once you have paired with someone, you can compete with this person and win virtual points. Participating in such competitions is a great way to sharpen your skills.

More recently, chess has been used as a brain-training tool for kids or as a way to learn about business strategies. This may be true to some extent, but I can assure you that most people who play chess dont play chess because they want to improve their business acumen or help improve their childrens school performance.

Most people play chess because they enjoy it and can engage in mental warfare, or a contest of intelligence, if you will, with their opponents.

Take your time with this book, highlight some of the checkmate combinations you want to try and practice them. Next time you play a game, try to remember the combinations you learned here, and based on the pieces you have left on the board, come up with the best plan of action to win.

More importantly, remember that the best way to improve is to play, so make sure you put all this new knowledge to practice right away. The more youll practice these checkmate patterns, the more naturally theyll come to you, and in time, youll be able to play the endgame like a machine.

Chapter 1. What Is Chess? Why Is It Worth Playing?

D o you know of a situation that gets all your mental faculties alert while the rest of you is calm and collected? Well, the game of chess is one such situation. Chess is simply the game to keep you young, confident and razor-sharp.

It is a 2-player game where each player tries to outmaneuver the other until the other player loses his or her King. King...? Yes, King. In ancient days when monarchies were the order of the day, if your King was captured, you did not have much of a country to talk about. The power was in enemy hands and you had no choice but to surrender. That is pretty much how empires were created. In chess, however, the King is part of the playing pieces. And like those ancient kings, this one is well guarded.

Well, each player has 16 pieces. And to play good chess, you need to know the rules governing the movement of each piece. The idea is to keep as many of your pieces safe as you capture as many of your opponents. And at the end of the day, your big target will be your opponents King as you pull out all the stops to protect your own.
