A rhyming, read-aloud book with warm illustrations conveys a comforting, faith-filled message from a Black father and mother to their children who see visual representations of their Christian faith, but question what it means when they dont see their skin color, their physical features, or their gender portrayed.
What about the angels, will they stop and stare, when they see that I may not have their same color hair? asks the girl.
In soothing verse, the father assures his children that everyone looks like Jesus and the angels by the things they do. As the family walks through their neighborhood, the father points out the beauty in Gods creations, from flowers, all unique and different, to all the children in their community each with skin a different shade. He reminds his children that pictures of faith such as angels were drawn by someone and encourages his children to draw their own pictures so angels look like all of us.

A Child of God Discussion Topics

We were all created in the image of God, regardless of race or gender
(see Genesis 1:2627).

What does it mean that we are created in
Gods image?

How can our actions make us more like Him?

We each have a unique cultural background.

Jesus would have looked like other ancient Jewish people in the Middle East. We look like our ancestors too.

Where are your ancestors from?

What do they look like?

Lets draw an angel that looks like you or your ancestors.

Where was Jesus from?

Lets draw a picture of what Jesus might have looked like.

God created diversity in everything see Genesis 1125 Discuss the - photo 32

God created diversity in everything!
(see Genesis 1:125).

Discuss the diversity and variety in Gods creations.

Name different colors of flowers, different types of animals, and different landscapes in nature.

Why do you think God made so much variety in everything?

God made people different also. Discuss ways people are different in skin color, culture, and language.

God loves us all the same. Discuss how our differences dont make us better or lesser than anyone else.

Why can it sometimes be difficult to look different from others?

How can we help someone who looks different from us feel more comfortable and included?

What similarities do we have with friends who look different from us?

Discuss what the book means when it says, So if were all Gods children, made to look like Him, that would make us family with different color skin!

If we are family, how should we treat each other?

We encourage you to continue this conversation with your children surrounding race, diversity, and inclusivity. Together, lets create an increased love for all of Gods family.
