Acknowledgments
Many people have nurtured both my life and work, and I will always be grateful to them.
My family has loved and supported me unconditionally, and to my sisters, Angela Barna, Marianne Froelich, and Antoinette Pahlck; my nephews and nieces Christian and Karen Hanny and now little Kate Rose Hanny, Matthew Touron, and Maurene Levine; and my brothers-in-law, Joseph Barna, Allan Froelich, and Robert Pahlck, I say a profound thank you. I will always owe a special debt of gratitude to my sister Angela and my brother-in-law Joseph, who cared for my father so selflessly during his final illness.
I have been blessed with a loving second family in Mathew and Lee Love, along with Wendy and Lance Barnard and the late and beloved Florence Lazar-Galleau, who generously donated so much of her time and talents to help me as I started my career.
Along the road of my life, many friends have made enormous contributions to my growth: Dr. David and the late Marilyn Kohn, Drs. Daniel and Justine Carr, Duane Perez, Jason Capuano, Gloria Futterweit, Dr. Dan Cherico, Dr. Marc Shatz, Dr. Henry Berger, Anthony Abreu, Peter Swersey, John Contini, Anne Hearst, George Paxinos, Steve Zubkoff, Kent Keets, Douglas Kohn, Ronni Janoff-Weinstein and Barry Weinstein, Scott Yacker, Erica Morales, Dee Kerner, Mike Nelligan, Joanna Silverblatt, Luis Soto, and, of course, my dear friends and associates Edoardo Danilan and Nina Danilan. I am particularly grateful for the personal and professional support given to me and my work by my esteemed friends Jack Rudin, Leon Wagener, Gloria Milstein Flanzer, and Louis Flanzer. The rarest of human qualities is generosity of spirit and they are the definition of this spirit.
All that I have and will accomplish in my professional life would not be possible without the support of a gifted and dedicated team that assists me each day at the Institute for Health & Weight Sciences. Rosemarie Passaro has been with me from the very beginning, as a colleague and cherished friend, and her stewardship of our financial matters is so crucial. I will always be grateful to a remarkable man, her late husband, Tom Passaro. Norbert Bogner, my office manager and friend, oversees the daily operations and deals brilliantly with my often crazy schedule. Mike Nelligan is our troubleshooter. He makes it all happen. Mikhail Pomeranets skillfully assisted me with numerous aspects of this book and gave me and my writers invaluable guidance on computer matters.
At crucial points in my development, I was able to call on the wisdom of several professors and advisors who enhanced my life with their guidance: Dr. Rosalea Schonbar, late director of the clinical psychology program at Columbia University, Dr. David Peretz, the late Dr. B. Schoenberg, and Rev. Harold Robertson.
Two of my closest friends, Dr. Andrew Lassman and Lenin De La Cruz, have been constant sources of support and encouragement to me at each step in the writing of this book. Andrew is also a brilliant young scientist who gives me a forum to share and formulate scientific ideas. I thank both of them in these pages so they will know how much their support has meant to me. A top personal trainer and colleague, Brett Austin, contributed his scientific knowledge and insights to evaluating important research along with introducing me to the concept of volumizing.
Each week I call on the professional expertise of a group of gifted advisors: Dr. David Kohn, Hon. Michael Kalnick, and Nellon Chu. Their guidance has enabled me to navigate around so many of lifes pitfalls. I also want to add a special word of thanks to a singularly talented litigator, Alan Green.
Miriam Rubin, a gifted, world-class chef, provided invaluable assistance with recipes and cooking skills, and Elissa Meadow, CEO and proprietor of Los Angeless new Solar Harvest restaurant, was extraordinarily generous in contributing some of that restaurants outstanding recipes.
