Introduction: How to Replace Failure with Success
T oday, about 300 million children and 600 million adults in the world suffer from obesity. This is almost triple the number of obese individuals we saw 50 years ago. It is caused by a dire combination of two factors: the overconsumption of high-fat, energy-dense foods and physical inactivity. In our times, obesity is a pandemic, and its not a solitary disease. It also leads to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, some forms of cancer, and a multitude of other health complications that shorten ones lifespan. And it concerns all of us: Without a proper diet and the right amount of exercise, we all risk developing these problems in the future.
Whether youre trying to significantly lose weight or to simply become a fitter or healthier version of yourself right now, youre reading this book because you want to stick to a diet that will help you achieve your health goals and prevent diseases and disorders. However, Im sure most of you who are reading this book have one common problem: As we all did, you too have tried and failed to stick to a diet in the past. Even though you want to live a healthier lifestyle, you still find yourself going back to your old eating habits that dont do any good for your body. You keep telling yourself, I cant help it. I love eating. Food is my Achilles' heel.
Well, guess what? Not all food is bad. The problem is not eating itself but eating food that doesnt nourish your body, makes your cravings worse, and prevents you from achieving your overall health goals.
Im a firm believer that theres always a way to achieve any goal if you really want to succeed. However, if you keep making excuses for yourself, then youll never be able to get where you want to go. Youll always feel frustrated every time you break your diet, which will then make it harder to get back on it immediately. As a result, youll set aside your goals and forget about them for a while. Youll keep eating as you please and satisfy every craving. One day, youll look in the mirror and hate the person staring back at you. Then, the unhealthy and unsustainable cycle continues.
But there is a way to tackle this problem and to replace failure and frustration with success and happiness. Failure and frustration result from targeting your goals in the wrong way. You might be trying to change too much at once, for example by forcing yourself into the diet before youre mentally prepared, by eating the wrong kind of food for your individual body, or by doing both at the same time. And these are just two possible reasons. There are many other factors that may have contributed to your lack of success so far. So before we proceed, please take a minute and try to identify what your biggest hurdles regarding dieting has been so far? Why did you abort your diet plans before? Is there one reason or are there many? List all the reasons you can think of.
If you know why youve given up on eating healthy prior to reading this book, you already took a big step towards future success. It will be much easier for you to address the specific problems you struggle with and to find solutions that target these issues in the individual way required. So, whatever challenges you might have faced before, the key to a successful transition and to sustainably implement a new diet in your daily life is this: Before we can apply any practical advice, the first thing we have to do is form the right understanding of the subject matter. Think about it this way: You cant get from Point A to Point B if you dont know how to drive a car. Before you can reach your destination, you must first learn how to properly operate the vehicle. Otherwise, youre just setting yourself up for disaster. Dieting is just the same. You need to learn before you take action.
The purpose of this book is to help you make this journey a lot easier. In it, I have gathered all the information needed to change your eating habits and to implement a plant-based and whole foods diet that is much better for your body. I will guide you in changing your mindset so you can prepare yourself holistically. You wont just stock your refrigerator and pantry with healthy food items, but you will also stock your mind with information that will help you maintain this new diet.
There are three steps to my diet formula: Learn, transition, and eat. In the first step, youll learn everything you need to know about what a plant-based diet is and why it is good for you. Youll learn to differentiate between foods that you should and shouldnt eat. Ill also present to you some scientific facts that support the benefits of eating primarily whole foods and plants. In the second step, youll learn how to transition into the new diet in a sustainable way. This step is all about changing your mindset so you can be kinder to your body, develop a healthier self-image, and keep your focus on the big picture. Lastly, in the third step Ill show you how to put theory to practice. To this end, I have included a list of alternatives for dairy, eggs, meat, and other animal products as well as a list for grocery shopping. On top of that you will find tips about kitchen equipment and food preparation techniques, sample menus to help you get started, and tips on how to overcome challenges while youre in the diet.
With this three-step diet formula, youll be able to stick to a plant-based and whole foods diet in the long run as well as achieve your fitness goals at a comfortable and sustainable pace. Sounds good? If youre ready to start this journey, turn the page and lets begin.
