Extreme Prey: by John Sandford | Conversation Starters
Extreme Prey is novelist John Sandfords 26th Lucas Davenport thriller. In this book, Lucas Davenport has come to a crossroads in life after leaving the Minnesota BCA and is enjoying a little downtime, and driving everyone around him crazy. He receives a phone call from his old friend, Elmer Henderson, the Governor of Minnesota, who has set his sights on the Vice Presidency. However, all of his planning will be futile if his opponent, Michaela Bowman, fails to receive the nomination, and if small town Iowa farmer, Marlys Purdy, has her way, Bowman will fail...permanently. Once again, Davenport is in a race against time and on the hunt for a killer. Penguin Random House calls the novel extraordinary!

Introducing Extreme Prey

S MALL TOWN IOWA FARMER, MARLYS PURDY, AND HER two sons have had a hard life but she and her Iraq War veteran son, Cole, have a solution. They are convinced things will improve if Elmer Henderson, Governor of Minnesota, wins the next presidential election. The only thing standing in Hendersons way is Michaela Bowman, the front runner for the Democratic nomination. Marlys has a plan, however; she plans to remove Hendersons obstacle to the White House permanently.

Meanwhile, Lucas Davenport has recently left his position with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation and is driving everyone in his life crazy. So, when Henderson calls and asks him to investigate some disturbing encounters and emails related to Bowdens campaign, Davenport jumps at the opportunity. Henderson tells Lucas of two very strange encounters on his Iowa campaign tour. First, an elderly lady approaches him warning him to move his political views further into the center so that he will win the election. The look in the elderly womans eyes unnerves the charismatic governor, and he makes a mental note of the exchange. When he receives almost the exact same message from a man with features similar to those of the elderly woman weeks later, his concern deepens, and he calls on Davenport for help.

Emails sent to Hendersons campaign and a blurry photo of the man in his earlier encounter are the only clues Davenport has to begin his investigation, and the emails lead to a fanatical left wing fringe political group with several skeletons in the closet. Questioning members of the party, Lucas suspects that at least one member may already be guilty of murder. Davenport meets one dead end after another racing to stop an assassination, and this time, hes on his own, without the backing of the Minnesota BCA.

Falling deeper and deeper into the psychotic mindset of killers, Marlys and Cole race to complete their mission with Davenport at their heels. Extreme Prey sets a brutally fast pace of thrill and suspense. Extreme Prey is a novel that will keep you awake at night in anticipation!

Introducing the Author

J OHN CAMP USES THE PSEUDONYM JOHN SANDFORD IN the Prey series. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist as well as the author of over forty published novels. He has also won the prestigious Distinguished Writing Award. Camp used his pseudonym Sandford in the Prey novels because he was releasing two different novels so closely together; so he thought readers may become confused at having two novels with the same authors name on sale at the same time. Sandford also co-authors a young adult series with his wife Michele Cook and was even the co-author of the science fiction book Saturn Run . He can list two non-fiction books to his bibliography as well, one on art and the other on plastic surgery. Many of his books have been translated into several different languages and are sold worldwide.

Camp was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and spent much time at his grandparents small farm. These visits greatly impressed upon him the plight of the small farmer, and many of his books are set in the Iowa and Minnesota countryside.

Camp is a two-year Veteran of the United States Army where he spent his term with the 4th Missile Command in Korea. Among his accomplishments, Camp boasts a Masters Degree from the University of Iowa. He and his wife divide their time between the stunning scenery of Santa Fe, New Mexico and the beautiful countryside of Hayward, Wisconsin. Camp is also a financial backer of the archaeological projects in Israel, and many of the archeological expedition findings are on view at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Before marrying Michele, Cook was married to Susan Jones, and together they raised two children and enjoyed three grandchildren as well. Unfortunately, Susan succumbed to Metastasized Breast cancer in 2007.

Marlys Purdy kills and cleans a rabbit from her pen without a second thought or any remorse. This is also the attitude she takes concerning assassinating Michaela Bowman. Do you think that a lifetime of farming and hunting animals for food is a factor in the downwardly psychotic personality she has developed? Why or why not?
