Introducing A Man Called Ove
A MAN CALLED OVE IS A SIMPLE AND HEARTWARMING story about a man who thinks he has nothing left to live for, and then goes on to find purpose in life. When Oves wife dies, he loses all purpose in life but continues to go to work like an automaton. A few months after burying his wife, Ove is forced, by his company, to retire after working there for three decades. Suddenly, he finds himself at a loose end and decides to kill himself because he doesnt know what to do with all his free time. Without Sonjas cheerful presence and someone around who actually needs him, Ove feels that that he had become redundant.
The book tells the story of Ove in alternating chapters, first going back into his past as a child and a young man who fell in love with his wife, and then telling the current story of the embittered old man who scares off the neighbors. Ove was born to an upright man whom he wanted to emulate all his life. When his father died when he was sixteen, Ove simply took over his job at the railway company. He soon managed to gain a reputation as a kind and honest man, but never managed to actually make friends with anyone. Then he saw a woman and fell in love with her. When she reciprocated, the two got married. Ove adored his wife, and the two managed to get along well in spite of their different personalities. After her death, Ove felt lonely and wanted to commit suicide. Over a period of time, his neighbors made him realize that he still had something to give to society, which ultimately makes him hold on to life.
A Man Called Ove talks about the simple pleasures of helping your neighbors and fellow citizens to achieve a purpose in life. The role of the wider community is very important, especially for children and elderly. The book also takes a critical look at Swedish society, especially the bureaucracy that keeps people down, in particular, the poor people with no contacts. This is hilariously conceptualized as the men in white shirts whom you dont have the power to stop. A thought provoking and funny story, A Man Called Ove is well written and interesting.
Introducing the Author
F REDRIK BACKMAN IS A SWEDISH AUTHOR WHOSE FIRST book, A Man Called Ove , became a phenomenal success, both in Sweden and around the world. It made him a household name, and he was even nominated Swedens most successful author in 2013, the year the book was published.
Backman grew up in Helsingborg, a scenic coastal city to the north of the country. He had ambitions of becoming a journalist but ended up studying religion instead. At some point, he lost interest in it and resorted to sending his writing to magazines and publications while driving a truck to make ends meet. He began to receive small writing assignments. He got a regular column at Xtra and has also written for the Moore Magazine and Metro . But it was when he started a blog that he got his first breakthrough as an author. Backman is an extremely popular blogger who blogged about his wedding preparations and his experiences with fatherhood.
Backman kept a personal blog and recorded various experiences in it and shared some of his writing as well. One piece of writing that became very popular with his readers was this character, which ultimately developed into Ove, the main character in A Man Called Ove . His readers encouraged him to weave the character into a book, and this is when Backman seriously started to write. He has since released two more books, both of which have done well. His first and most famous book is also going to be made into a movie. It has also been developed into a play and is popular in Stockholm.
Backman is working on several new projects but doesnt have any writing routine as such. He writes whenever he gets the time and enjoys it. Backman is married and lives with his wife and children, juggling his writing career with being a stay-at-home dad.
Discussion Questions
question 1
Much of the humor of the book stems from Oves failed attempts to kill himself. He tries many different methods to commit suicide but manages to either botch it up or someone unwittingly stops him. Do you think Ove really wanted to commit suicide at all? Give reasons for your answer.
