Introducing An Officer and a Spy
E NGLISH NOVELIST, JOURNALIST, AND FORMER BBC television correspondent Robert Harris once again brings readers along for an exciting, dark, chilling, and emotionally charged ride, this time in his much-praised 2013 historical fiction thriller titled An Officer and a Spy . In this novel, Harris puts the spotlight on the infamous Dreyfus affair that took place in Paris at the turn of the 20th century.
It is 1985 in Paris, and a young Jewish army officer named Alfred Dreyfus has just been convicted of treason. He is believed to have passed secrets to the Germans, and so he is stripped of his rank, humiliated in front of twenty thousand people, bound in chains, and sentenced to life in prison.
At the core of the story is the character of French officer Georges Picquart, the brilliant mastermind of the counter-espionage body that 'proved' Dreyfus' crime against the government. The story gets even more interesting when Picquart one day comes across sensitive information that leads him to question Dreyfus' conviction.
Picquart suspects there is still a spy lurking in the military. As he gathers more pieces of evidence that Dreyfus might just be an unfortunate scapegoat, a victim of an anti-Semitic time and place, Picquart also unfolds a chilling conspiracy among the army's top ranks. He eventually finds out that much of the evidence was doctored that eventually sent Dreyfus into exile.
Discouraged by his superiors to further his investigation into the matter, Picquart courageously continues and risks his life to find the truth, free an innocent man, and stop the spy still freely operating inside the military. Throughout this dangerous endeavor, Picquart must come to terms with his own thoughts and actions, and face the countless disappointments he will discover about the military, the government, and his beloved country.
Harris again blows away readers with An Officer and a Spy , further proving his authority in the historical fiction genre. His work was called "a gripping tale" of the scandalous Dreyfus affair.
