Introducing Life and Other Near-Death Experiences
A LL HER LIFE, LIBBY MILLER HAS BEEN AN OPTIMIST. SHE has always looked at life through her happy-go-lucky point of viewuntil now. Camille Pagn introduces us to Libby at a crucial moment of her life in which everything changes.
To start, Libby receives a life-threatening diagnosis from her doctor, but before she can even think about it, her husband makes a marriage-ending confession. She makes some extreme decisionsrefusing treatment for her illness and not telling her family that she is sick. On top of that, she leaves her work, puts her house on the market, and sells all the furniturewithout telling her husband. She then travels to Vieques, a Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico, to pass the last of her days.
But that idyllic and paradisiac setting doesnt ensure peace and happiness for her. She finds herself dealing with her past and her future. On one hand, she has her ex-husband calling and her twin brother Paul, who finds the strength to overcome his fear of flying to be with her. On the other hand, she finds a new mana pilot named Shilohwho turns her world upside-down and has more in common with her than what she can see at first. All in all, her journey to Vieques is full of new experiences and new people that will challenge her point of view and will make her deal with the past, even if she doesnt want to.
Camille Pagan manages to take the reader, little by little, on a journey through the depth of disease and the heartache that happens when going through a path to self-discovery. The reader who dives into this novel will find both sadness and joy. The author finds a way to take a serious subject, which could easily be a tragedy, and turn it into a funny and kind story of hope. Ultimately, this novel will make the reader stop to think about what is really important and show them how, no matter what extreme situation someone is going through, life can be a joyful ride.
Introducing the Author
C AMILLE PAGN IS A GRADUATE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF Michigan, where she studied English and Native American literature, and she also worked as a research assistant at their Health Systems department of cardiology.
Although she describes fiction as her first love, she was first known to the public through another of her passions: health and nutrition. Her work has been published in many sites and magazines, such as Glamour , Womens Health , O: The Oprah Magazine , WebMD.com , Arthritis Today , Forbes.com , Mens Health , Allure , and most recently she worked as the health editor of the magazine Real Simple .
Her work of fiction started after her daughter was born. Her debut novel, The Art of Forgetting , was published in 2011 and received many good reviews that praised her ability to combine a subtle sense of humor with wisdom. In this novel, she talks about the importance of friendship, love, and forgiveness, narrating the story of two friends who reunite after one of them suffers a personality-altering brain injury.
Her second novel, Life and Other Near-Death Experiences , was published in November 2015, but its e-book version was pre-released in October 2015 as part of Amazons Kindle First program. Life and Other Near-Death Experiences became the number one bestseller in the Kindle store for about four weeks after the pre-release. In this second work of fiction, Camille Pagn has taken the point of view of a woman recently diagnosed with cancer who is also facing the end of her marriage. The author explains in recent interviews that she was going through some difficult times in her life, having lost a dear friend to cancer, and writing the novel was a way to cope with her loss. She has received a lot of positive feedback from people who have struggled with similar situations, which has been an important reward to her.
Camille Pagn combined her two lines of work to enrich each of them. Her sixteen-year career in journalism helps her to portray clearly the message of any given story, while the work of fiction makes her evaluate the beauty of the words she chooses and the sentences she constructs, which improves her non-fiction.
