Introducing Brotherhood in Death
B ROTHERHOOD IN DEATH IS, AS ARE ALL OF THE IN DEATH series, set in the year 2061. Tough as nails Lieutenant Eve Dallas brings criminals to justice with some help from her billionaire husband, Rourke, and the NYSPD. Eve receives a frantic call from her friend in the department, Dr. Charlotte Mira, begging her to come help her husband, Mr. Dennis Mira, who after storming to his cousin Edwards home in order to confront him about a secret meeting designed to sell their grandfathers plush brownstone in the West Village, has been knocked unconscious. Eve rushes over to learn that before Dennis was hit from behind, he saw his cousin, the powerful ex-senator Edward Mira, battered and bruised sitting in a chair. However, when Dennis awakens his cousin is missing, there is no sign of Edward, and very little to no evidence of a crime, Eve has only Denniss vague recollections and a politicians legacy to help her solve this mystery.
As the investigation deepens, Rourke and Eve discover dark and horrible secrets that seem to be continuously overlooked among the privileged and wealthy. As a former lawyer, judge, and senator, Edward Mira mingled within this world, making enemies on a regular basis. He also made some very close tight-lipped friends behind closed doors but Eve along with her badge and billionaire husband intends to disrupt the lives of many while investigating Edwards disappearance. She continually uncovers dishonest deals and wrongful motives related to the ex-senator, as well as the family discord over a multimillion-dollar property. When Edwards body is found, Eves determination and that of her teams to find the culprits intensifies. The criminals left a cryptic message: JUSTICE IS SERVED. Eve and her team are determined to find out who is serving it!
Eve, Rourke, and the superb team at the NYSPD soon find themselves embroiled in mystery and intrigue within the elite world of New Yorks upper crust of society. Eve shares her dark past with Dennis and learns many of Dennis dark secrets herself, giving her insight into a man she has always looked to as a father figure. These secrets give Eve clues into why Edward may have been murdered and who may be the culprit.
The plot soon takes a twisted turn when the motive of the murder is revealed to be revenge against horrible rapes committed by Edward and a friend, and Eve finds herself hunting two women who have already suffered horribly at the hands of Edward himself. Brotherhood in Death is an extremely moving, dark, and twisted novel involving real-life situations in which the lines between right and wrong are blurred.
Introducing the Author
B ORN IN 1950 IN SILVER SPRING, MD, NORA ROBERTS attended Montgomery Blair High School and is the bestselling author with more than two hundred books published. The youngest of five children, Roberts always loved reading, which was encouraged by her Irish parents. She started writing her first novel while snowed in during a blizzard and was finally published in 1981 to romance publisher Silhouette. The rest, as they say, is history. She writes as J. D. Robb, and has derived her pen name from the first names of her two sons and by shortening her last name to Robb.
The author and her publisher were happy to let the J. D. Robb In Death series build slowly rather than expose her real name and have the series explode into mass publication. "I wanted to try something a little different." explains Ms. Roberts. This series has also allowed Roberts to continue an ongoing series rather than end her books in a single novel or trilogy. She is able to develop more characters and their lives in more depth. She is also able to set the book in the future but not so far into the future that things have changed beyond recognition.
Some of Roberts awards include the Rita Award for best novel and the Quill Award for best romance. For ten years, 1991 until 2001, all 68 of her books have been listed in the The New York Times Best Seller list, and in 2001, thirteen of her books were on the best sellers list with several hitting the number one spot. She was also the first to be included in the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame, and as of 2011, and celebrated over 176 weeks in the number one spot in the The New York Times Best Seller list.
Discussion Questions
question 1
Dr. Charlotte Mira is a psychiatrist with the NYSPD. Why do you think she called Eve to help with the case rather than another homicide detective?
