Introducing Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics
Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-To Book by Dan Harris, New York Times bestselling author, along with Jeff Warren and Carlye Adler, is a self-help book about getting started with meditation. The book was written for those who have never meditated as well as those who have been meditating for years. Since writing his first book, 10% Happier, Harris decided to change his focus from awareness about meditation to educating people on how to meditate. He wants to know why people are not meditating, especially considering the amazing benefits. His focus is this book is on encouraging people to begin meditating.
In writing the book, Harris traveled to eighteen states in the United States with his co-author, Jeff Warrenwhom he calls the Meditation MacGyverto figure out why people dont meditate. Together, they examined some of the myths and misconceptions of meditating. They interviewed a variety of people to get a better idea of why they dont meditate. Harris is a self-proclaimed traveling evangelist for meditation.
Harris explains in the book that there are many different types of meditation. This book focuses on mindfulness meditation, which originates from Buddhism. Although, Harris says you do not have to have a specific belief system to practice this type of meditation. There are three steps to mindfulness meditationsit comfortably, focus on your breathing, and being aware of your where your thoughts are. Of course, the book offers explanation of these steps and teaches you how to incorporate them into your meditation practices. Harris compares meditation to beginning a new physical exerciseit is difficult in the beginning, but over time, you will get better.
The book addresses some of the excuses or reasons you may have for not meditating and helps you overcome those so you can get started meditating. For example, you may think you are not capable or that you dont have the time to meditate. Maybe you think it is too weird or self-indulgent. The book addresses all of these qualms, and more. The book also encourages you to make a habit of meditating and to keep it up after you get started.
In the book, readers will have access to guided meditations, which start with the mindfulness basics and get increasingly more advanced. Each of the meditations has instructions that have been carefully written by Jeff Warren.
The book has a companion app that offers advice and meditation from some of the best meditation experts and teachers in the world, including coauthor Jeff Warren, world-renowned teacher Joseph Goldstein, meditation teachers to professional athletes George Mumford, New York Times bestselling author Sharon Salzberg, and many more. The app includes all of the meditations in the book, plus others. Users of the app can look forward to new content, which is added on a regular basis. Users of the app can also view supplemental videos to enhance their reading experience.
The idea for this book came after the release of Harris first book, 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help that Actually Works, when he realized that it is difficult for most people to create healthy habits for themselves. He felt as though 10% Happier did not have as much impact on his readers as he would have liked.
Published in December 2017, the book has already received much praise from readers and critics alike. The book has 4.2 stars on Amazon and ranks in the top 25 in three categories. Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of The Happiness Project, said the book is well researched, practical, and crammed with expert advice. She also praises the authors style of writing, calling it an irreverent, hilarious page-turner. Author of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening, Joseph Goldstein praises the book, saying the book is a gold mine of wise guidance for fidgety skeptics and experienced meditators alike.
