Introducing Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer
M AGNUS IS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER NORMAL TEENAGE BOY living in the streets of Boston after the murder of his mother. Or so he thinks, until he wakes to find his relatives searching for him and seemingly walks into a trap set by his uncle. Soon Magnus finds himself dodging fire on a bridge with a sword that raised out of the water and magically into his hand. The magical sword, however, is not enough to save his life, and he dies valiantly on the bridge while saving most of Boston, only to enter Valhalla and find that his father is Freyr the Viking god of summer.
Thus begins an epic adventure with new found friends and two old friends, Blitz and Hearth, who turn out to be a dwarf and an elf who have been protecting Magnus for the last two years while he lived in the streets. Now Magnus and his Valkyrie, Sam, along with Blitz and Hearthstone, must race to stop Ragnarok, a prophesied battle in which the Norse Gods battle at the end of times. Theres also the tiny matter of escaping from Valhalla. So not only does Magnus have to find his sword again, re-tie a psychotic wolf determined to swallow the sun, and outsmart Loki, the god of mischief, he has to do it all before hes caught and taken back to Valhalla by his hall mates and an extremely angry Valkyrie named Gunella. Gunella despises Magnus Valkyrie and is convinced that Sam is evil. She therefore carefully edits Magnus death in a great battle to look as if he did nothing great at all. It's hard to be among warriors when it looks like you dont belong and it's looking more and more like Magnus isnt going to fit in in Valhalla at all. Magnus must resist the temptations of Loki as well. Even when hes offered a reunion with his mother whom he saw die violently in an explosion two years earlier.
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 1: The Sword of Summer is an extremely exciting book in what promises to be an action-packed adventure for readers ages 10 to 100.
