Introducing The Last Anniversary
S OPHIE HONEYWELL HAS EVERYTHING SHE COULD EVER want in the world a great job, plenty of money, a loving family, and lots of friends. However, she is unable to count her blessings, and she spends much of her time wrapped in self-pity because she is not a married woman with children. When her ex-boyfriend Thomas shows up out of the blue after three years, she is extremely nervous. But it turns out that he wanted to tell her about a house that his Aunt Connie had left Sophie in her will. Except for Thomas sister, Veronika, all the family members seem happy for Sophie to have the house.
Sophie is thrilled about living on Scribble Gum Island, a place she has loved since childhood. She moves into the house and helps out with the family business of showing the tourists around the house where Alice and Jack Munro had disappeared into thin air one day, leaving their baby behind. Rose and Connie Doughty had named the child Enigma and brought her up as their own. They started giving tours through the abandoned house to curious tourists. When Connie died, Rose wanted to tell everyone about the mystery, but Enigma would not allow her. In the end, it all comes out anyway.
The Last Anniversary also has several side plots. Grace, a cousin of Thomas, is suffering from postpartum depression, but no one recognizes the symptoms, including her adoring husband, Callum. Grace is terrified that she would somehow end up murdering the baby, and she simply cannot feel love for him. She decides to commit suicide after setting up Callum with Sophie, whom she thinks would make a good mother for her son.
Sophies own relationship problems take up a large chunk of the book. With all of her friends getting married and having children, she goes berserk about not being married. Once she moves to the island, she finds two eligible men there, but she falls in love with Callum. The person who Sophie decides to be with also carries the narrative to some extent.
The Depression plays a big role in the book, giving rise to different secrets being kept over the years. The one secret that no one wonders about is the secret that remains hidden.
Introducing the Author
A N AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR WHO SPECIALIZES IN ROMANCE and drama, Liane Moriarty has become famous worldwide for her books that include in-depth characterization, important issues, and a darker side of life not usually dealt with in this genre of books. She also writes childrens books.
Moriarty worked in the advertising field as a marketing manager of a legal publishing company and was pretty career-oriented. She left her full-time job to start her own company, called The Little Ad Agency. The business didnt prove to be very successful, and she went on to become a freelance advertising copywriter, a career in which she once again attained success. She continued in this job until she achieved success as a novelist.
A Sydneysider by birth and upbringing, Moriartys childhood was spent reading. Encouraged by her father, she began to write at a young age. He gave Moriarty her first publishing deala $1 advance for writing a novel for him. She complied and wrote a three-volume series called The Mystery of Dead Mans Island , which incidentally is not available on the market!
Another inspiration for Moriarty was her sister, Jaclyn Moriarty, who is an established author. When Jaclyn called her sister to tell her about her publishing deal, Moriarty was motivated to get her book published as well. But after facing constant rejection from publishers, she decided to enroll at Macquarie University in a masters program. She wrote her first book, Three Wishes , as part of her degree program. She managed to acquire her degree and get her novel published at the same time. From then on, she never looked back and has written several books. Another of her sisters, Nicola Moriarty, is also a published author.
Her hobbies include reading, heli-skiing, skydiving, and scuba diving. Today, Moriarty lives in Sydney with her husband and two children.
Discussion Questions
question 1
In spite of her having every advantage life could give her, Sophie continued to weep because she didnt have a husband. She is even envious of a disabled victim of war just because she has a man in her life. What do you think the author is trying to bring out with this portrayal of Sophie? Does this behavior make you sympathize with her or irritate you? Why?
