Introducing The Murder House
J ENNA MURPHY RETURNS TO THE HAMPTONS TO START afresh in the police force under Langdon James, her uncle and the chief of police. When there is a double murder, James is quick to find a scapegoat and arrest him. Noah Walker is a good suspect, but there is no evidence against him. So James fabricates evidence, especially after he is threatened by the husband of Noahs lover. Noah is convicted and sentenced despite someone murdering Landon on the eve of his giving evidence.
But Jenna would not let go. With a passion for the truth, she has no hesitation in speaking up in court when she finds evidence that her uncle had lied. Noah is now free, but that leaves the murders open now. Jenna is determined to solve the case of her uncles murder, but she faces one obstacle after the other. Her boss, the new chief, Isaac Marks, quickly goes against her. Aiden Willis, the grave digger turns up at the most inopportune moments to scare Jenna off. Noah Walker is still a suspect, and it doesnt help that Jenna feels a strong chemistry with him. To round it off, she is also aided and abetted in her endeavors by the local innkeeper, the nice guy of the community, Justin Rivers. One of them is a murderer. But who?
Continually thwarted in her attempts to find the murderer from all angles, Jenna gets frustrated. She is dismissed from the force as well when she refuses to let the matter rest. But with the help of a young policewoman, Jenna continues to work on the sly. But each step she takes is leading her towards danger.
The key to all these questions lies at No. 7 Ocean Drive, a large and gorgeous house facing the beach. A terrible history of the family resulted in the property being abandoned. Six men over the generations were born with a mental defect that made them rapists and murderers. All were called Holden. Is there a seventh Holden out there somewhere or is the Ocean Drive house merely a red herring? Jenna risks her life to find out, but in the end, she discovers more than she bargained for.
Introducing the Author
J AMES PATTERSON IS A PROLIFIC AUTHOR WHO HAS written a large number of books in the mystery and thriller genres. He is also the author of a few non-fiction books on several subjects including a biography of Tutankhamen. In addition, Patterson has also written books for children and teens. He is best known for his Alex Cross series, based on the cases of a Washington-based forensic psychologist. He holds the Guinness World Record for the largest number of bestsellers that made it to the #1 position in the New York Times .
An American by nationality, Patterson was born and raised in Newburgh in New York. His father was an insurance salesman, and his mother was a school teacher. He graduated from Manhattan College and was offered a full scholarship to Vanderbilt University. He accepted at the time but quit after the first year. After this, he moved back to New York and started working in an advertising agency as a junior copywriter. He worked his way to the top, gradually becoming the CEO of J. Walter Thompson.
Though Patterson had started writing at the age of nineteen, it was only a decade later that he was first able to publish a novel, The Thomas Berryman Number . This was the first stepping stone to success, and Patterson began to write regularly and made a name for himself. Several of his books have been adapted for the big screen and television.
One of the criticisms faced by Patterson today is that he has developed a writing model that is not considered ethical by many readers. He co-authors many of his books, merely outlining the plot and letting the other writers do the actual writing. Some say that this affects the quality of the final product as well. However, despite these criticisms, Patterson has won several awards throughout his career. He is also a contributor to education funding through his James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarship at three universities.
Patterson currently lives in Florida with family and continues to devote time to reading and writing.
Discussion Questions
question 1
Why do you think Langdon James deliberately lied about Noah Walkers confession to the murders? Was he genuinely interested in getting justice or was he influenced by John Sulzmans threat? Do you think Langdon was justified in lying under the circumstances? Why or why not?
