The President Is Missing: A Novel by James Patterson | Conversation Starters
Former United States President Bill Clinton partners with veteran author James Patterson in the New York Times bestselling novel The President Is Missing. This novel confronts a threat that is so massive that it jeopardizes not just Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, but the whole America. Fear and uncertainty grip the whole nation. There are rumors of cyberterror, espionage and a traitor in the Cabinet. Even the President himself is not exempted and he becomes a suspect. Suddenly, he disappears from public view. Set over the course of only three days, The President Is Missing highlights the vulnerabilities and the inner workings of our great nation. This novel is filled with information that only a former President would know. This is the most terrifying, authentic and original novel to come along in decades.
Sunday Times London is gripped by The President Is Missing. They praise the novel and remark that the plotting is immaculate... the writing is taut. Time described this novel as filled with the classic tropes of a big commercial thriller. Ballard and Bosch series author Michael Connelly praises the duo behind this novel, Clinton and Patterson are a dream combo. Two great storytellers, one inside and one outside, both at the top of the game. He goes on to decribe the book as an undeniably gripping ride through the hidden passageways of power and politics.

T he New York Times bestselling book The President Is Missing is a political thriller novel by former United States President Bill Clinton and veteran author James Patterson. The novel also topped the bestselling books list by USA Today , Wall Street Journal and Indie .

The novel is about the sudden disappearance of the United States President Jonathan Lincoln Duncan. Duncan was a Gulf War veteran and a former Army Ranger. His disappearance jeopardizes Secret Service protection as it came as a cybercrime attack. The book begins with President Duncan rehearsing a speech for his appearance before the Congress. There are impending impeachment proceedings. The Congress found documents supporting the accusation that the President made a phone call to a cyberterrorist. The calls receiving end was in Turkey and it is for the cyberterrorist Suliman Cindoruk. Apart from this allegation, they also discovered that the president ordered and authorized an attack against a number of Ukraininan operatives located in Algeria. This attack foils any attempt by the operatives to capture Suliman. In this attack, an American soldier was killed in action. The President must answer for all these.

While in Paris, the Presidents daughter receives a mysterious message with the code Dark Ages. The message came from Nina, a girl from Eastern Europe. She immediately informs her father about the message and the strange girl. She was immediately requested to come back home. The secret code Dark Ages is known by only eight people in the United States. It is a codename used for a cyber security operation that America is running after a hack on the system. The question that baffles President Duncan is who may have leaked that confidential information.

President Duncan invites Nina to the White House. As he questioned her about who was the source of the leak, Nina says that she has only half of the information that the White House needs. To get the other half of the information, the President must meet her partner Augie. Nina asks President Duncan to meet Augie in a stadium where a baseball game will be held on Friday that week. The president arrived incognito at the stadium. Without the protection of the Secret Service, he met with Augie. Unknown to him, a Turkish terrorist leader named Suliman Cindoruk is running a cell called Sons of Jihad. Cindoruk contracted mercenaries to kill Augie and Nina. As President Duncan and Augie were leaving the stadium, the assassin aimed his gun at Nina. She was then waiting for Augie and President Duncan. When the President sensed danger, he took into practice what he learned when he was still a Ranger. He took Augies gun and shot two members of the ground team who were helping out the assassins. The assassin rained bullets on the van. The President ducks to avoid any injury. In no time, the Secret Service arrives and saves the President. It appeared that the Secret Service followed the President when they learned about the location of the presidents meeting from an envelope that Nina brought to the White House. They swiftly took the President into an armored car and the convoy headed straight to Virginia. The assassins caught the direction that the convoy is headed to. They quickly planted another ground team on the bridge that linked DC and Virginia. An attack happened and Davis, the driver of the presidential armored car saved the President. He took the hit and died in action. The President was whisked into another vehicle and drove off with Augie. They left the Secret Service team behind. He arrives at his Chief of Staff's residence, which he calls the Blue House. There he takes stock of the events that happened that evening. The White House was put under lockdown. President Duncan must take control of the panicked nation from a remote location to prevent another cyber-attack on American soil. He must answer how to prevent the attack, who sent the assassins and how to find the White House insider who leaked the code to Augie and Nina.

The president tried several ways to stop the virus. In the end, they started the virus accidentally and that started erasing all files. However, a security element in the virus prevented it after only deleting a couple of files. It then asked for a password. In the last crucial seconds, the President guessed the password and the virus was completely eliminated. President Duncan still needs to find out who the traitor in the White House is.

New York Times Book Review describes The President is Missing ambitious and wildly readable. The New Yorker says that the readers will find a twist or two of which Frederick Forsyth might be proud. The Wall Street Journal describes the novel harrowing. They go on to say that Patterson withholds details until the moment of maximum dramatic effect.
