Introducing Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
J ACOB PORTMAN COMES FROM A RICH FAMILY, BUT THIS fact is not sufficient to help him lead a satisfactory life. He continues in his humdrum existence, enlivened only by his grandfathers stories and knowing that the only thing the future holds for him is to be a partner in the family business. However, when his grandfather dies, things suddenly change for Jacob. Battling with grief, Jacob is unable to believe the normal explanation for his grandfathers death. He gets nightmares about strange monsters and has to go to a therapist.
His grandfathers dying words give Jacob a place to start seeking healing. But things dont quite work that way and all he finds is evidence that his grandfathers tall stories might just have been true. When he comes across a letter written to him by a Miss Peregrine from Wales, he is determined to go there and meet with her, and thus discover the secrets of his grandfathers childhood and traumatic past. It took a while to convince his parents, but when his ornithologist father realized that there rare birds that inhabited the island, he was more than happy to take Jacob.
Once in Wales, Jacob sets out to discover the house where his grandfather took refuge. It was hidden deep in the woods, and he found it badly bombed out and in a state of disrepair. He felt strangely drawn to the place even though he felt scared to be there. But when he saw a young girl calling out his grandfathers name, he knew he had to discover more. Jacob discovers a different time and place where his grandfathers friends are young again.
It was then that he realizes that his grandfathers stories were all true. He did take refuge with children who are able to perform different feats. Known as peculiar, they stayed hidden in a time loop to keep themselves safe from both the outside world and the monsters that had vowed to destroy them all. These are the monsters that Jacob will have to face and bring down if he wants to save his grandfathers, and now his, friends. In the process, Jacob discovers he too is peculiar and not as ordinary and boring as he thought. He just had not bargained for the price of being different.
Introducing the Author
A N AMERICAN AUTHOR, RANSOM RIGGS HAD A UNIQUE approach to his debut fiction book, Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children . He wrote the book around a number of strange photographs he had collected over the years. As a child, Riggs was taken to flea markets by his grandmother, where the only things that interested him were the vintage photographs. He gradually got immersed in these pictures and began to build up a collection. He originally got the idea of publishing a childrens picture book with the pictures, but his editor at Quirk told him that it would be better to write a story based on the pictures. With this in mind, he wrote Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children . The next two books in the series are also out now.
Riggs is originally from Maryland, where he was born on an old farm. He went to school in Florida and later graduated from the University of Southern California in film studies. His career was focused towards making films for five years, but it didnt quite take off. But he also continued to write during this time: blogs, articles, storiesanything he was able to do. His blogging on Mentalfloss during this time got him noticed, and he got a contract to write a book about Sherlock Holmes. This was his first full-length book and was called The Sherlock Holmes Handbook . He still loves making films and collecting photographs, but writing has become his full-time career.
Riggs met his current wife, Tahereh Mafi, in the period after he had released Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children . Both of them were going through a divorce when they met, and they tied the knot in September 2013. Mafi gave Riggs a model of Miss Peregrines home for his birthday. Today, Riggs lives with his wife in California and continues to work on the three things that he loves.
Discussion Questions
question 1
Abe Portman told his grandson fantastic stories about his childhood, featuring strange monsters, children with superpowers, as well as stories of his refugee home in Wales. Why do you think Abe chose to tell these stories to his grandson and not his son?
