    Introduction

T he value of herbs to peoples health cannot be ignored. The study of the plant kingdom and all its benefits had long been started. In fact, it predates back to the ancient times when the Egyptians and the Sumerians made a long list of the medicinal plants they used.

    A Proven History

T hroughout history, the use of several plants to cure and prevent diseases had not only been practiced in one country, but in other parts of the world, as well, such as India, China, Greece and other countries in Asia and Europe. The health benefits that these herbal medicines promise are not only limited to common heart ailments, but to skin, immunity and blood disorders as well.

Because of the unmistakable value of these medicinal plants, a lot of pharmaceutical companies and health agencies have made their own research not only to prove the scientific basis behind the claims of the history books, but also to expand knowledge on this matter. With the discovery of the many health benefits of these plants, people receive more options in terms of treating their ailments.

The only difference is that the herbal medicines that people use today come in various forms - tablets, syrup, and capsules, unlike in the past when the ancestors still needed to boil, pound and extract juices out of their leaves, stems and flowers.

With over a hundred thousand medicinal plants known, eight are most commonly used and most available. Read on to learn more about eight of the most common and powerful herbal medicines in history.

    Chapter 1: Garlic

I f truth be told, there is more to garlic than just helping you lower your blood pressure. There are still a lot of things that you have to know about this famous spice. Aside from the magical touch it provides to every dish, garlic also offers a lot of health benefits.

A lot of studies have already been made about the mechanisms behind garlics actions and all of them only boil down to one thing- and that is allicin. This is the secret ingredient found in garlic that is responsible for almost all of garlics health benefits. Allicin is a sulphur compound that is produced when the garlic is cut, crushed or pound. Allicin is known to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective, blood sugar - lowering and anti-cancer properties.

What are the health benefits of garlic?
    1. Garlic lowers blood pressure and blood cholesterol.

Probably the most famous health benefit of garlic is its effectiveness in lowering blood pressure. This effect of garlic can be attributed to a lot of factors:

    1. The effect of garlic on the arteries.

Blood pressure is directly affected by the size or the diameter of the blood vessels. Basically, a decrease in the size, called vasoconstriction, causes an elevation in blood pressure, while an increase in the diameter, called vasodilation, does the opposite. Garlic lowers the blood pressure by promoting vasodilation. Garlic causes vasodilation by donating an amino acid, called arginine, for the synthesis of a compound called nitric oxide. This compound, which is produced by the epithelial cells, is a potent vasodilator. Studies have shown that garlic also has inhibitory effect on an enzyme that normally catalyzes the formation of angiotensin, a vasoconstricting agent. Inhibition of this enzyme prevents vasoconstriction, which is one of the main culprits behind an elevated blood pressure.

    1. The effect of garlic on the levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Normally, cholesterol molecules are transported to and from the cells via lipoproteins. These lipoproteins are classified according to the amount of cholesterol and proteins they carry. The more cholesterol they contain, the denser and heavier they become. Very low density lipoproteins (VLDLs) and low density lipoproteins (LDLs) contain more cholesterol, while HDL contains less.

LDLs are mainly responsible for transporting cholesterol from the liver to the cells. During the transport process, cholesterol molecules contained in LDLs can stick to the walls of the blood vessels, causing obstruction. If not removed, the obstruction can impair blood flow to the heart causing an ischemia. Garlic protects the heart by lowering the levels of the bad cholesterol or LDLs.

    1. Garlic can prevent cancer from developing.

Cancer, to many people, is such a scary word - an affliction that nobody would want to have. Well, thanks to garlic, many people can stay cancer-free for the rest of their lives. Allicin is mainly responsible for this benefit of garlic. Research has shown that an intake of one clove of garlic keeps the oncologist away. This is because garlic can prevent the production of nitrosamines that are potent carcinogens from food, and can facilitate DNA repair.

    1. Garlic as an antibiotic, antifungal and antiparasitic.

Yes, youve read it right. Garlic is a 3-in-1 antimicrobial agent. It kills not just the bacteria, but the other microbes as well, such as fungi and parasites. One of the most well-studied bacterium that garlic is said to be most effective against is Helicobacter pylori, a bacillus that is found in the stomach. This bacillus has been associated to a lot of gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastric ulcers and cancer.

The physicians worst nightmare, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is surprisingly vulnerable to allicin as well! Garlic also has inhibitory effects against fungi, particularly on their sporulation, making them susceptible to the harsh environment. The growth of a parasite called E. histolytica, the culprit behind amoebiasis, is said to be suppressed by this wonderful plant.

H ow is garlic used to achieve these beneficial effects? Experts recommend that garlic be eaten raw or fresh. Raw garlic yields the highest amounts of allicin and antioxidants. Blood pressure control is achieved by eating one clove of garlic every day. This is equivalent to 3 grams of fresh garlic, 5 grams of garlic oil and 1 gram of garlic powder.

    Chapter 2: Ginseng

T he use of ginseng as a medicinal plant can be traced back to East Asia, where its significance cannot be undermined. There are various classes of ginseng, depending upon its origin. There are Japanese ginseng, Chinese ginseng Korean and American ginseng. Each of which has its own unique properties. Currently, ginseng is classified into two major types - the Asian ginseng, which encompasses Japanese, Chinese and Korean types, and the American ginseng.
