Introduction
H i there! My friend Robert texted me one day in London: Angelos, Im flying to Moscow tomorrow. Can we catch up tonight at the pub to teach me a little bit of Russian? Initially, I thought...WTF? Is he serious? What has he been doing all these days? I know that it takes at least a couple of weeks to get a Russian visa sorted in the Russian Visa Centre in London. So, he definitely didnt decide to fly to Moscow today! But then I thought...thats a challenge! Thats a James Bond mission impossible...maybe possible! Can I teach him the very very basic? What is the very basic Russian? How do I teach him the very basic? If I had only a couple of hours, a pen and a few blank sheets, what would I write down for him? Sometimes, tight time restrictions can awake motivation: Yes, we can do it! In this book youll find the things I wrote down for Robert that evening in the pub. The very basic. In the simplest words ever. I have to say that I enjoyed the challenge but I wrote this book for the next Robert who will ask me to catch up on the day before he flies to Moscow.
If you see yourself in Robert, read this book. Dont f***** call me. Kindness and smiles, Angelos Explore Russian
Hi bro! How are you?
W hat shall we start with? Probably you know already but lets see how to say hello in Russian. ! - Hi! is informal. You can say to your friend or someone you know well. Dont say to your professor, an older person, or someone you have just met.
Ill tell you later what to say to those. ? - Hows it going? (lit: how are things?) is also informal. You can use it with your friends. Its something like whats up ? It often comes after . For example, you see your friend Lena and you say: , ! ? - Lena, hi! How is it going? literally means How are things?. for how and for things .
You notice though that are is missing. In Russian, the present tense of the verb to be (am, are, is etc.) is not expressed. To give you some examples... When you want to introduce yourself you just say: . - I am John. means I .
You see am is missing! Another one: . You can guess what means... Yep! Student! Russians often make this mistake when they speak English. They say: I teacher! Now you know why... A typical answer to would be: - good, well or , c. means thanks . means thanks .
And when you want to thank someone very much you say: . - Thank you very much. You dont say when you meet someone of course. You use it when someone does something for you, a favour, a present etc. OK, you asked and your friend Lena answered back . She will then probably ask back: ? - How about you? (and hows things with you?) You use this ONLY to ask back someone who has already asked .
Ill explain shortly why. So, this is what weve got so far:
, ! ? | Lena, hi! How are you? |
. ? | Good! How about you? |
Instead of using (how are things) you can simply ask: ? - How are you? You remember means how . means you , and again you use it with someone you already know well. is an informal you ! Well see later whats the formal one. - Im well . - Im well .
Note that if someone asks you you answer back in the same way: ? - And you? I want to say you dont use . , . - Good, thanks . Now, lets say you finished chatting with Lena (by the end of this book you should be able to have a basic conversation in Russian with Lena) and you want to say goodbye. What do you say? - bye is also informal just like , , ? . ?
Good! How about you? | , . | Good, thanks. |
! | Bye! |
! | Bye! |
O ur first words:

So, is the opposite of . Now, if you havent seen someone for some time instead of / you can ask: ? - Hows life? - life One can answer a question like this in an optimistic, funny way: ? ! - Life? Wonderful! W hen it comes to saying goodbye you can add a few other phrases depending on when youll see the other person again. For example: . - See you later (lit: until meeting). This phrase is used when youre likely to see someone again in the near future. You can also text this phrase to your friend after you agree to see them later.
