In essence, this book will help you communicate and give you an overview of the language, which will serve as a bridge to further study.

The primary focus of this book is on phrases and constructions, which you can use in everyday communications. Moreover, along with vocabulary, basic grammar concepts are included. Although Russian grammar is consideredand justifiably soto be quite complicated and some difficulties lurk even at the beginning level, this book will address it in small portions and illustrate the rules with vocabulary items so that you can easily get the picture. Each chapter contains small and simple dialogues that will help you practice new words and grammatical constructions, and at the same time, gain some phrases to try in conversations with Russian speakers. The grammar may look tricky and challenging, but it is also interesting, and you will learn new concepts and ideas. Again, it may also prove useful for further study, should you choose to continue with Russian.

It is believed that grammar and vocabulary traits may present a key to national character and culture. Language knowledge will help you not only to communicate in Russian but also better understand Russian mentality. So, small snippets of cultural material are detailed, as well as linguistic information to support the idea and make it more interesting for you to follow.

To start, Chapter 1 introduces you to the Russian alphabet, which, at first glance, looks exotic and quaint but is extremely easy to read. While going through Cyrillic letters, you will also get an idea of the sounds as well. Various hints and examples are provided so that you can grasp the peculiarities, and get an impression of the typical Russian accent, speech patterns, how to distinguish different Russian vowels and consonants, master sounds that are unique for the Russian language, and then use these skills for further listening activities.

In Chapter 2 you will learn about the basic grammar concepts of the Russian language and the things that make it so different from English. You will read about the key characteristics of a synthetic language, the importance of endings in Russian words, and the mysterious concept of language gender. In addition, you will acquire some speech etiquette formulas that you will need throughout the rest of the book, and learn how to greet, thank, welcome, and say goodbye in Russian.

Chapter 3 introduces personal pronouns and verb aspect, conjugations, questions, and tense forms. You will learn to talk about yourself with the help of verbs, including your nationality, language abilities, and occupation.

Chapter 1: Russian Letters and Sounds

This chapter focuses on the sounds and letters of the Russian language by pointing out some basic differences in comparison with English and illustrating how to pronounce Russian language sounds and recognize letters. Here you will find only an alphabet overview and some common words for pronunciation training without any particular grammar.

The Russian alphabet significantly differs from the English one. There are 33 letters in it, and like many other Slavic languages, Russian uses the Cyrillic system. When it was created in the ninth century, the original Russian alphabet was based on the Greek one. As a result, some letters look like the ones from Latin alphabets, some resemble Greek ones and are unique, and some may mislead you. For example, a lower-case letter , which looks like the English p, sounds like [r] in Russian.

Although at first glance, the letters look exotic and peculiar, they are extremely easy to read. Unlike English, the reading rules are very simplenearly all the letters are tightly connected with the sounds they represent. Of course, there are some spelling rules and exceptions, which are studied during Russian language courses at schools and described in dictionaries, but the idea of a spelling contest, which is so popular in the US, would look absurd for a Russian native speaker.
