Introduction

When learning any language, grammar definitely comes up as the most challengingand boringpart. Russian is no different. Unfortunately, grammar is not something that can just be brushed off as an afterthought.

You simply cannot skip learning grammar if you truly want to become proficient. It doesnt work that way, and there are no shortcuts. If you want to be able to express yourself in Russian using clear and precise language, you need to build a solid foundation in Russian grammar.

This book is here to help you. In the lessons in this book, we will lay down the rules in Russian grammar and provide you with lots of examples, clarifications, and exercises.

Practice Your Russian Listening Skills and Pronunciation

A key to success in language learning is to get a good grasp of pronunciation at the beginning of your lessons. This requires constant listening practice. With this books audio accompaniment, you will get a headstart in your listening comprehension as well as hone your pronunciation straight off the bat.

Each lesson and exercise contains audio narrated by a native Russian speaker. By listening to the audio and reading the written text at the same time, you will be able to connect how a word and sentence looks with how it sounds when spoken in actual Russian conversations.

Embedded Grammar Workbook

There is no need to buy a separate workbook to help you practice the grammar points you learn. We have integrated hundreds of different types of exercises into the book. This way, you will be able to cement your learning through taking the quizzes after each grammar lesson and you will be able to assess your progress as you go along.

Build a Learning Habit

This book also aims to help you build a learning habit that will help you sustain your Russian learning even if your motivation wanes as you go along. Youll find that the book is divided into 20 lessons, with one lesson meant to be tackled each day. After 20 days of studying consistently everyday, you will have formed a learning habit that will ultimately help you achieve your learning goals.

Russian Grammar, Simplified

Russian grammar is already complicatedwe dont need to make it even more complex. So in this book, youll notice that we use the simplest yet thorough explanations. We do not want to burden you with wordy explanations and unnecessary jargon. Instead, in this book we explain Russian grammar in a way that makes it easily digestible and easy to grasp.

We have put a lot of effort into this book so that it will be most useful to your Russian language learning journey. We certainly hope that it will help you build the strong grammar foundation you need to eventually reach fluency in Russian.

Thank you very much.

Lesson 1: How to Introduce Yourself in Russian?

It is always daunting to initiate a conversation with a native if youve just started learning a foreign language. But luckily there are basic Russian phrases that help you easily introduce yourself. Even if your Russian doesnt let you hold deep and long conversations yet, these simple expressions are more than enough to lay the beginning of a great friendship.

Initiating a conversation

If you want to get acquainted with a Russian, there are two ways you can start a conversation depending on how formal you want to be.

In an informal setting (for example, in a bar or at a party), you can approach a person by saying:

Listen to Track 1 (Reminder: )

!

Hi!

.

My names Jake.

.

Nice to meet you.

In a formal setting (for example, in the university or at a conference), you can start a conversation with these words:

Listen to Track 2

!

Hello

.

My name is Jake.

.

Its a pleasure to meet you.

Listen to Track 3

If it is a Russian who starts the conversation, they may ask you what your name is. In Russian, it is:

?

Whats your name? (informal)

?

What is your name? (formal)

(If we translate this question literally, it means How are you called?)

You already know how to answer this question:

Listen to Track 4

.

My names Jake.

.

Nice to meet you.

OR

.

My names Jake.

.

Its a pleasure to meet you.

To express a friendly attitude, Russians can also use phrases like (masculine) / (feminine) or (masculine) / (feminine).

Talking about yourself

During a conversation, a Russian may ask you some questions. For example, where you are from or what your occupation is. Even if they dont ask, you can take the initiative and spice up the conversation with some details about yourself.

Listen to Track 5

(your native country or city) I am from

For example:

I am from Great Britain.

I am from England.

(pronounced Se-Shi-Ah).

I am from the United States.

I am from Canada.

If you dont know how to correctly pronounce your country in Russian, just name it as it is pronounced in English. Russians will understand.

Listen to Track 6

(age) . I am years old .

For example:

.

I am thirty years old.

.

I am twenty-two (years old).

.

I am forty-one (years old).

Please note that if the age (cardinal number) ends in one, two, three, or four, Russians use the word / . For all other ages, they use .

Listen to Track 7

(occupation). I am a (occupation).

For example:

.

I am a teacher.

.

I am a student.

.

I am a coder.

.

I am a lawyer.

Interestingly, you need neither a verb nor an em dash in this sentence (the em dash is used in Russian in place of a missing verb) because the subject is a pronoun.

Listen to Track 8

(place). I work at/in (place).

For example:

.

I work at a school.

.

I work in a big company.

.

I am self-employed.

When indicating a place of work, Russians usually use preposition followed by a noun in the prepositional case. The preposition is used less frequently, usually for big places such as a plant, a factory, a market, etc.
