Thats quite a mountain, Bear said.
Its ridiculous, Frog said. I can hardly believe somebody left it here. It has to go.
I could try to climb it, Bear said.
Climb it? Nobody can climb this, Frog said.
Lets throw sticks at it instead.
I can climb it. I will climb it, Bear said.
Watch me. And Bear began to climb.
Im not going to tell you that you cant do this, Frog shouted up to Bear, because that would be discouraging. But I am thinking it. Im thinking it pretty hard.
And Bear kept climbing.
The mountain was very hard to climb at times, but there were little plateaus where Bear could rest.
And on one of these plateaus, he met Goat.
Whats shaking? Goat said.
Im climbing this mountain.
The whole thing? Goat said. It doesnt get any better higher up.
Have you been higher up? Bear asked.
No, Goat said. But look how high you are.
Its great. You can stay here. Well make popcorn and watch a movie.
Its great here, Bear said, but Im heading up.
You cant get much higher, Goat said, putting the popcorn into the microwave.
I can. I will. Watch me, said Bear.
And up Bear went.
And the climb got harder.
The mountain became steeper, and sometimes, when it was cold and rainy, Bear would just sit and cry and think about Frog and how throwing sticks at this mountain had probably been a pretty good idea.
He wondered if the climb was worth it.
He thought that maybe it was time to head back down.
But then a letter from Frog arrived.
Watch me, said Bear.
And his climb resumed.
Eventually, Bear met others who had climbed as high as he had.
He found they had a lot in common.
Freaking rain, am I right? Ostrich said.
I stepped on a funny pointy rock, Dog added.
This is as high as I go, said Rabbit.
This seems like a good place to start a family, said Dog. Were thinking about opening a donut shop or a manicure place.
But Bear felt like going higher.
Good luck! they shouted.
What a nut job, they said quietly to each other.
And finally, Bear got to a place he liked.
It was beautiful.
He set it up nice and cozy.
And he even got one of those machines that makes a single cup of coffee really fast.
And he invited Frog to come up for a visit.
You climbed it, Bear! Youre a kook, but you did it! Frog said.
