Rest is rust, and even after my prime, I stayed involved by competing on the Senior Tour, designing courses, and hosting philanthropic charity events for childrens education. The sport truly brings out the best in people and some very valuable life lessons can be taken from such a wonderful game. Some of my accomplishments including winning 165 tournaments on six continents over seven decades, and the career Grand Slam on the Regular Tour and Senior Tour, are featured in the following pages. Also included are some of the great players and moments that followed me as well. My favorite tournaments are all featured prominently, including The Open Championship, which I won three times in three different decades, and also The Masters, which I have been lucky enough to compete in 52 times and win three times as well.
Its also been a tremendous honor to return the last several years to be part of the Honorary Starter ceremony at Augusta National. I was also extremely fortunate to serve as captain of the International team in the Presidents Cup three times, including 2003 in my home nation of South Africa. Team events in golf are exciting and after captaining the South African Olympic team at the 2016 Summer Games, I am pleased golf has a place on sports biggest stage. I still avidly follow the game, and am so impressed with the level of play and competitiveness around the world each and every week. The game of golf is in a great place moving forward with some tremendous stars, who are not only exceptional on the course, but also terrific people. But we must continue to innovate to make golf fun and enjoyable for all ages and skill levels.
Always remember that amateurs are the games lifeblood. I do hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoy playing this great game for so many years that will always be such a major part of my life. Best wishes, Gary Player I. 1970s AND EARLIER QUESTIONS Golf has been around for a long timesince the 15th century in Scotland to be exact. The first 18-hole round was created at the Old Course at St. Andrews in 1764 and things have gotten bigger and bigger since.
While there were a number of big names in the earlier years, the sport really became popular in the 1970s, led by Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Jack Nicklaus. Without these three players, its hard to imagine where the sport would be today. Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddeningand it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented. Arnold Palmer I never went into a tournament or round of golf thinking I had to beat a certain player. I had to beat the golf course.
If I prepared myself for a major, went in focused, and then beat the golf course, the rest took care of itself. Jack Nicklaus Answers for this section are on . RED TEES What was Arnold Palmers nickname? A. Golden boy B. The King C. Iced Tea D.
