Chapter 1: About the Game and Field in General
Picture 4

T o play fast pitch softball, you need two teams. Nine players are on the field at one time. If you play slow-pitch softball, you have ten players on the field. The field is dirt infield though this may be asphalt or artificial turf. It has a quadrilateral shape grass outfield, running areas and a diamond. You have four bases - first base, second base, third base and home plate. The bases form a square that is 45-65 feet on each side. The pitchers circle is at the center of this square. Inside this circle is the rubber. This has a rectangular shape and is flat. The length is a foot and a half. We place the rubber 40-43 feet away from home plate.

The Aim of the Game
Picture 8

E ach team tries to score more runs than the other. To do this, the batting team hits the ball into play with the bat. The ball is a sphere. We make this from leather or synthetic material and is 10-12 inches in circumference. You have one or more umpires to officiate the game. Players or umpires may ask for play to stop when the ball is not in play or after a play because the outcome is clear.

The game has seven innings. In each inning, you have two halves - top and bottom. In the top half, we see the away team bat and try to score runs. The home team occupies the field and tries to score three outs. In the bottom half, the home team bats. At times, the games might have a time limit.

Start of Play

A t the start of play , offense sends a batter. He occupies the home plate. Batting order gets fixed before the game so all players follow this order. The pitcher from the defense stands on the rubber and pitches the ball. He uses underhanded motion and keeps both feet on the pitching rubber at all times. In slow-pitch, he may take a step back before he releases the ball. The batter attempts to hit the ball. The bat is smooth and round, made of wood, metal, or other composite material.

Strikes and Outs
Picture 16

I f a pitcher throws three strikes against a batter then he is out. You have a strike if a batter swings and misses the ball. It is also a strike if the batter hits a foul ball. If the pitch is outside the strike zone of the batter, then it is a foul. When a batter reaches four balls, he gets awarded first base. We call this a walk. Only the umpire behind the home plate can decide on strikes and balls. Bunting a foul ball is a strikeout while a foul ball may not always be a strikeout. In case bunting is not allowed, then the batter is out. After two strikes, if a batter hits a ball partially or swings the bat, then he is out if the catcher catches the tipped ball.

Tagging a Runner
Picture 20

T he batter will swing his bat and attempt to hit the ball. When he succeeds, he becomes a base runner and begins to run to the first base. The defense will try to field the ball and throw the ball between the players. They move in such a way to make it possible to put the player out. The defense can tag the runner by touching the ball to him when he is not in the base. They can touch the first base while they have possession of the ball. This is enough to beat the batter to first base and actual tagging of the batter is not needed.
