Foreword
When I was a graduate student, I found myselfincredibly lonely for a pet. I knew it wasnt fair to bring a dogor a cat into my life, so one evening, completely on impulse, Ibought a Russian Dwarf Hamster. I named him, with typicalacademic creativity, Leo Tolstoy.
I know now that even though he was a lovelyshade of gray with striking black dorsal stripes and a whiteunderbelly, Leo was actually a Winter White.
That night, armed with all the things the petstore guy said I needed (no doubt a list bulked up by the fact thathe worked on commission), Leo and I set up housekeepingtogether.
My knowledge about rodents of any kind waszero, but Leo was, from the beginning, a tolerant, good-natured,and downright comical little fellow.
He was far too lightning-quick for me to risktaking him out of the cage, but he loved to stand up on his hindlegs while I scratched the bridge of his nose.
We played all sorts of little games with hischew toys, and I marveled at his capacity to jump on his runningwheel and go for what must have been miles.
Hed keep galloping along until his littlesides were heaving from the exertion before hed plop down and lookat me as if to say, Did you see?
Leo was my companion for the three years ittook me to complete my masters degree, including writing mythesis. His aquarium was right beside the table where I worked, soI would read him passages of my boring prose while he ran in hiswheel. I doubt he was interested in my topic, but he was niceenough to pretend.
Even though he was an impulse buy, Leo turnedout to be a superb pet. Good student that I was, I quickly got upto speed and really learned how to care for him, outfitting hiscage with the correct accoutrement and offering him not only pelletfoods, but also treats of vegetables and fruit.
When I went home for long holidays, or forthe summer, Leo came with me and occupied the top of the hutch in aquiet corner of my mothers kitchen.
He and my father developed quite afriendship. Daddy suffered from life-long insomnia and derived realpleasure from talking to Leo late at night and watching hismarathon running sessions.
At the advanced age of three years, I foundLeo peacefully asleep in his cage one morning and it was onlythen I discovered what I can only assume was a cancerous lump onhis chest.
I was absolutely heartbroken. I truly had notrealized how much Id come to love the little fellow, and Iremember him with great fondness to this day.
While a Dwarf Hamster may not be the perfectpet for everyone, my experience with Leo was completely positiveand thoroughly enjoyable.
In the following pages, I will tell you thethings I didnt know when I walked out of that pet store with Leoin a tiny cardboard box. We made it work, but I highly suggest youeducate yourself in advance!
If you do decide to go forward with youradoption of a Dwarf Hamster, I hope you make a friend as enjoyableand as memorable as my little Leo.
He has been gone some 25 years now, but in mymind I can still see him running in his wheel with perfectabandonment and joy. His was a short life, but he lived it, inproper Dwarf Hamster fashion, to the absolute fullest.

Table of Contents
Part 1 Meet the Dwarf Hamster
The name Dwarf Hamster clearly implies thatthese pet rodents are smaller than a normal hamster, but by howmuch?
On average, a Dwarf Hamster is about 50%smaller than his larger kin. All varieties are playful,good-natured, and exceptionally active to the point that some arequite difficult to handle.
While it is often assumed that a hamster is aperfect pet for a child, I would caution you from the beginningnot to regard a Dwarf Hamster in that light. Although incrediblycute and fascinating to watch, this type of hamster is often bettersuited for older children (age 9-12 and above) and adults.
