Bloodhounds: Pet Detective
When it comes to the Bloodhound breed,we are talking about an animal with a very rich history that datesback to the Middle Ages. They were descendants of a dog breed knownas the St. Huberts Hound and also the Sleuth Hound. The breed madeits mark in history through accompanying royalty on huntingexcursions thanks to their great sense of smell. Their pedigreecan be traced back thousands of years, and were one of the first toearn historical descriptions and mentions ahead of other ancientdog breeds with the exception of the pugs.
Bloodhounds also have quite a strongidentity prior to classification since there were some oldpaintings that give us an example of the breed before they weregiven a formal classification by dog organization like the AmericanKennel Club.
There were reports that the breed firstmade its way into the United Kingdom around the time of William theConqueror during the Norman Conquest, though there were no officialevidences or sources that can confirm it. Nevertheless, thebloodhounds were known to helped many noble man in their hunt forprey and this tradition was carried until today as they help assistlaw enforcements in their hunt for a culprit. There were reportsbefore that a bloodhound breed was able to track down a criminal asfar as 7 miles along a route that was heavily trafficked! I guesswe can say that when it comes to keeping them as pets, youre notjust getting a companion dog; you also got yourself a nosey petdetective! No wonder why many upper scale dog keepers love toinclude a Bloodhound as part of their pack.
The personality of the bloodhound breedis among the best in the dog world. This canine makes a loyal housepet and a friendly companion. They have the amazing ability tosniff out prey, track down a human or animal scent and generallyaid people particularly those working in law enforcements when itcomes to the various aspects of the hunt. They were called as thebloodhound mainly because of the legendary abilities of theirnose and how it accurately tracks down the blood of a wounded prey. When it comes to getting along with his human companions, vets andbloodhound keepers highly recommend potential dog owners to takethe time to properly socialize the breed so that they can get alongwell with other household pets including people. Since bloodhoundsare large canine, they are definitely suited for older kids thanyounger ones because even if you get a pup, young kids may not beable to keep up with the dogs high energy.
Generally speaking, bloodhoundsparticularly puppies will love to play with kids of all ages butsome could be quite rambunctious than others, so make sure that thepersonality of the pet you will choose will also suit you or thatof your family members so that the dog will also be easy to getalong with. If your kids learn to get along with your pet, they cansurely have a great time playing with one another and this can be agreat exercising opportunity both for your dog and yourchildren.
The active energy of bloodhounds maycarry on even if they are already well into their senior yearsthough it will be much lesser than when they were younger.Bloodhounds can also get along with other household pets such ascats or dogs but you need to ensure that they are properlyintroduced and socialized. Its also ideal that you raise yourbloodhound together with your other pets so that they will grew uptogether and get used to being with each other. Make sure tosupervise your pet dog with another pet, be it a dog or cat, untilyou are sure that theyre safe to be left with one another or untiltheir relationship is already established.
We do not recommend that you get morethan one Bloodhound because it may be too much to handle for mostpeople especially if its your first time of owning a pet dog.Bloodhounds are not for first time owners! Keep in mind that thisdog breed demands attention from their owners and requires dailyexercise and mentally stimulating activities which can take up mostof your time. However, if you think you can handle keeping two dogsor you already have some experience in becoming a dog owner thenyou can keep more than one but just make sure you can provide forboth.
Should you get more than one, its bestthat you acquire a male and a female that are both neutered andspayed because if they are not neutered or spayed then they willmost likely have territoriality issues or even unwantedpregnancies. Bloodhounds also tend to get into a fight if they arekept with the same sex breed.
ChapterOne: Bloodhound as Pets
The American Kennel Club describes thebloodhound breed as dignified, noble and a dog that exhibitswisdom, power and solemnity. Even though he is an easy going andgentle breed thats also sometimes quite bumbling, bloodhounds arenot the lazy type of dog that you often see on TV. This large breedrequires lots of space and safe areas to play around and rambleevery day. It is mandatory that he is secured on a leash, or in afence (if he is free to roam around the house) and that is becausehis nose just locks on to any fascinating scent that he cansmell.
Once that happens, this dogs ears areturn off and its quite impossible to get his attention back sincethey - or perhaps their nose, just cant resist the scent to thepoint that they will trail it for many miles until they get hit bya car.
Bloodhounds are generally gregariousand good natured especially with people and other breeds butthere are still some individuals that cant simply get along withother dogs and can also be aggressive to species of the same sex.
