The Havanese is an ancient breed of canine, named after the Cuban city of Havana, which shares its geneticheritage with other old-world Bichon types of small companion dogsthat originated in the Mediterranean region during pre-Christiantimes.
The Havanese breed has been around since the1500s, during the time when the Spanish brought their dogs withthem when they claimed what we now know as Cuba.
Over the course of many centuries, interesting variations between these dogs took place, whichseparated them into distinct breeds, each with a slightly differentappearance and temperament.
These small dogs were considered a luxuryitem of the upper class and during the Cuban Revolution the breedwas almost totally destroyed. However, when the upper class fledfrom Cuba to the United States and Europe, they took their Havanesedogs with them.
