What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder?
O ppositional Defiant Disorder is usually called ODD. The truth is that, there is a thin line between childrens opposing power and those not directly doing that! Yes, especially, when children with such conduct are not flippant enough to be seen as ODD.
Now to differentiate the two scenarios above, we may need to consider the case when parents are informed of the bad behaviors of their kids and to a great measure the disobedience by their kids, however, this has to be observed for a while....
Well, I mean when this conduct goes on for a long period of time (lets say over six months) or when the defiant conduct is observed to be bigger and steadier compared to other children of the same age, then we may have the capacity to characterize the behavioral issue as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
In most cases the young person with Oppositional Defiant Disorder frequently starts the habit of threatening, chafing, and becoming uncooperative including being mean or inconsiderate towards adults and respected people.
This terrible conduct has been found to hinder many kids enjoying a normal life at home, or at school. In fact in some cases other action that may harm other child is included.
Anyway, in case, you find your child to manifesting the above, he or she may be demonstrating Oppositional Defiant Disorder, in fact, if that is the case, you will regularly discover other behavioral problems such as sorrow, tension, emotional episodes, hyperactivity, and inconvenience.
What Causes Oppositional Defiant Disorder in a Nut Shell?
Well, let me be upfront with you here, all kids will be oppositional especially with or without ODD, when they are hungry, tired, stressed or upset. In fact, they may also argue, disobey, talk back or defy an adult.
Nevertheless, you need to know that it is a usual part of their growth, especially for kids of 2 or 3 years old. Now, before you start asking the ... but when does this hostile and uncooperative action become an issue?
I will say again like I did above when defining ODD, that it will be an issue if and when it is consistent, frequent and different when compared with other kids of similar age level and when this action affects the kids family, social and academic life then we might want to conclude that the kid in question is exhibit ODD or oppositional defiant disorder.
Again, we must not forget that, this kind of behavioral disorder is common to kids in early school and preschool age. In some cases, it will be expressed by brutality and aggression tendency including being defiance to irritate others. Again, even though lots of kids behave like that, ODD is characterized by a steady and hostile behavior for minimum six months as earlier mentioned above.
Discovering the Oppositional Defiant Disorder Symptoms:
T he truth is that the oppositional defiant disorder symptoms are easy to see.
And the key to easily discover them is the age... yes, age is key to determining if the behavior your child is displaying is actually oppositional defiant disorder symptoms.
Also, you have to consider the frequency and seriousness of this kind of behavior, as well as the seeming intent; meanwhile, you must know that your child (or teen) know what is right from wrong or the appropriate behavior for the situation.
Anyway, if the behavior continues on and on after a punishment and stern talks, that is , if the child gives explanations that seems to be on purpose then, he or she may have Oppositional Defiant Disorder going on.
Keep in mind that the time of these occurrences can be attributed to his or her age or some irritability at that moment, but by and large, it is the continued intolerable behavior that must be watched out for!
In fact, the manifestation of the following habits like contending with adults, intentionally attempting to trouble or harass other children or a grown-up, resentful, requital looking for, saying harmful things to others, having rehashed fits, yelling obscenities or swearing, continually accusing others, contending and declining to oblige to rules are a part of the exhibited sorts of oppositional defiant disorder symptoms in the child or teenager.
However, we all wonder what could be the reason for such a terrible conduct in one child compared to others, especially if they are siblings. The truth is that the actual reason is not really known. But attempts have been made to try to shed more light on this issue.
Possible Reasons for ODD:
The main variation of oppositional defiant disorder from other action abnormalities is the lack of clear violation of the right of others. There are no indications of psychotic, affective and conductive disorders.
The key causes of ODD are genetic predisposition, biological factors like abnormal modification in the performance of neurotransmitters of the brain, delays in development and exterior factors like psychological atmosphere at school or at home.
Meanwhile, the disturbances in behavior are known as the main cause of major deterioration of the kids professional, social and academic activities. And in fact, based on a study; a minimum of five percent of kids nowadays can be identified with ODD!
Well, in actual fact, a lot of child psychologists correctly relate oppositional defiant disorder with concentration deficit hyperactivity disorder. Well, not all kids suffering from this issue have ODD; nonetheless most of the kids have about 65% of ODD.
