Before getting pet chickens, check rules for your area. Some places dont allow youto keep chickens. Also, be sure you can look after us properly. We'll need food, water, and a clean place to live. Plus, we need company and vet care if we get sickor injured.

Choosing Your Chickens

What type of chickens will suit your family? Noisy cockerels (boy chickens) may wakeyou and your neighbors when they crow, every morning! Most people choose to keephens who lay nice, tasty eggs!

Baby chickens (chicks) need special care and indoor homes. Older chickens can livein almost any yard. Breeds of chickens come in different colors and sizes. They behavein different ways, too. If you would like lots of eggs, choose a hybrid like me.

Where to Get Chickens

Before you choose a chicken, learn all about us by visiting a farm, breeder , or rescuecenter. Choose chickens that are bright-eyed and interested in the things aroundthem. If you choose retired commercial hens , they may need more care and attention.

Get at least three chickens, because we dont like to be on our own! Ask for helpto choose chickens that get along well together. If you mix breeds and sizes, theymight fight. Try for chickens who grew up together. Leg bands can help you to tellus apart.

Getting Ready

Chickens live outdoors, but well need a hen house or coop to sleep in. We don't like wind, cold, or rain! At first, we might need help into our house in bad weather. We like space to move around and stretch. Cover the floor in straw or dry wood shavingsfor our bedding.

Dont forget the furniture! Chickens need comfortable perches so we can jump up and roost at night. Hens like me also need nest boxes where we can lay eggs in peace.

Don't forget to get your yard ready, too! The perfect outdoor space has grass, somewhereto shelter us in bad weather, and patches of dry soil. Long blades of grass couldget trapped in my tummy, so please keep it mowed

Before your chickens come home, check your yard to make sure we cant escape andanimals cant get in. Foxes, coyotes, rats, large birds, and even cats and dogs liketo eat us! Youll need fences as tall as a grownup, or a covered run that can bemoved from place to place.

Welcome Home

Keep me inside for the first week, so I know it's safe and I don't run away! Showme how to get outdoors and make sure I can find my food and water. Also, give usthings to do! We like ropes, wooden blocks, or pecking at hanging food.

When weve settled in, well love exploring your yard. Watch us carefully, especiallywith other pets. They might try to eat us! Well soon learn to go back into our housein the evening to roost. Lock us safely inside for the night. Open the door againin the morning.

Feeding Time

Keep feeders full of food made especially for my age and breed. Added grit helpsme digest my food. Chickens scratch at the grass to find seeds and insects to eat.We also eat young roots. Make a game for us by scattering grain in the yard for atreat.
