Hello! Im Squeak and this book is all about pets like me. Rats and mice are rodents ,and we make great pets. Its fun to watch us play and explore. You can teach us tosnuggle in your hands, and even sit on your shoulder.
Before getting pet rats or mice, be sure you can look after us properly. Well needfood, water, and a clean place to live. Plus, we need company, safe toys to playwith, and vet care if we get sick or injured. In return, well be your best friends.
Its time to meet some more mice and rats. Check out our different coats and colors.Rats and mice have similar needs but are slightly different animals. For example,rats are bigger than mice. They need larger homes and more food.
In the wild, rats and mice live in groups. If possible, I like to have company, especiallywhen I am asleep. If you would like to keep a rat or a mouse, think about buyinga friend for me if you can.
Mice or rats are a good choice if you have no other pets. Were afraid of animalssuch as cats and dogs. Never keep mice with rats or other types of rodents. We needcompany of our own kind.
Animal shelters , rescue centers , breeders , and pet stores are the best places tofind us. Ask the on-site expert to help you choose mice or rats that know each other.For example, girl mice make good pets, but boy mice may fight each other. Boy miceoften have smelly pee, so be careful where you keep them.

Wash your hands before and after handling me.
Talk to me and feed me treats to show you are friendly.
Gently scoop me up with cupped hands.
If I poop, pee, or try to escape, it might mean Im frightened. Put me back and trylater.
Never pick me up by my tail.
Sit on the floor so I dont get hurt if I jump out of your hands.
Mice and rats love exploring. Fill our home with tunnels, ropes, ladders, and rampsfor climbing. Get a special rat or mouse exercise wheel. Scatter food around my cageso I can play hide and seek.
When Im used to being handled, let me play outside my cage. This is my chance torun, jump, and explore a new area. Make sure there are safe hiding places. Keep dangerousthings out of reach in case I nibble them.
