~ From MaryAnn Kohl
In the case of writing a book about art for toddlers, three minds are definitely better than one!Dana Bowman was first introduced to MaryAnns philosophy of art when reading her book Preschool Art. Dana was pleased to find an author who felt the process of art for young children was more important than the finished product. When Dana signed up her twin toddlers for a popular community art class for toddlers, she met toddler teacher Renee Ramsey. Renee had this same philosophy about children and art. Renee and Dana began to talk about how much a book about art for toddlers was needed. They approached MaryAnn Kohl about collaborating on just such a book, and so began a great three-way writing friendship with First Art as the outcome.

MaryAnn says, The team of Dana and Renee added a depth of experience and wisdom to this book. I have learned so much from both of them and I cannot thank them enoughRenee Ramsey has taught process-oriented art to toddlers and preschoolers for more than 20 years. Her popular toddler art program, My First Art Class, is presented in recreation centers in 10 different cities in the San Francisco bay area. An accomplished ceramics artist, Renee lives with her husband, Steve, and their daughter, Ginger, in San Jose, California.Dana and her husband, Mike, live in Palo Alto with their three children: twin daughters Heather and Elizabeth, and younger sister Karen. The three sisters spend rainy days creating art indoors, and sunny days creating even messier art outdoors. Thanks Everyone Many educators and parents have contributed their favorite - photo 2

Toddlers and twos are unique.

They are separating from mommy and daddy and beginning to become independent people with their own preferences. Their outright declarations of By myself! or No, no, no! can be challenging. Because toddlers and twos are going through many changes of independence and separation, they often are uncertain or resistant during this time. Support and encouragement are key to making this transition time a happy one. A toddler or two-year-old may resist an activity one day and then welcome the very same activity the next day. Toddlers and twos offer adults a unique challenge to be flexible and patient, along with the joy of helping them grow through exploration and discovery.
