Introducing The Alice Network
The Alice Network is the acclaimed bestselling book of author Kate Quinn. Quinn is well-known for her historical novels Empress of Rome and The Borgia Chronicles. The Alice Network is her first novel set in the 20th century.
The Alice Network follows the story of two women. Two stories with the two Great Wars as backdrop. A year into World War 1, we follow the story of young Eve Gardiner who was enlisted as a spy in the real-life Alice Network. She was trained by Lili, who operate the huge network of spies hidden within the enemys fence. Lili is inspired by the real Louise de Bettignies, the Queen of Spies. Her name for espionage was Alice, hence, the Alice Network. This factual network of spies during the first World War had a number of women spies like Eve Gardiner. Louise was multilingual in English, French and German. She can pass as a different person with a change of names in papers. With the sanction of the British Intelligence, she set up the Alice Network that sourced men, women and children all throughout war-torn France to gather essential information that can destroy the enemy. Louise relays the reports to England where the British Intelligence plans the attack on the enemies. It was a dangerous risky job that men, women and children undertake in the hope of ending the war.
Women and children were essential in the gathering of intelligence as they can eavesdrop and relay messages effectively without being suspected as much as men would have been. Both men and women were essential in the journey to the victory during the Great Wars. The men were out in the field, putting their lives at stake for the glory and victory of their country. The women were also out in the field, also putting their lives at risk in the less-known yet equally vital role of relaying messages that can save the lives of men in battle. This is an undeniable display of wartime heroism and patriotism.
In alternating chapters, Quinn paints the stories of the undertakings the spy Eve Gardiner had under the Alice Network and the story of the young socialite Charlotte St. Clair.
Thirty years after, barely two years after the second World War, comes young Charlie St. Clair. She had an easy life and was off to finish in a college. Her life was perfect until she found out she was pregnant. This derails all the lofty plans her family had for her. Upon knowing of the shame Charlie has brought to her family, her domineering mother sends her to Europe to deal with her little problem. Charlie was stripped of the family she knew. She then devises a plan to look for that one relative whom she dearly loves, her cousin Rose. She desperately searched for Rose as she disappeared in a Nazi-occupied France during the war. Charlie believes in her heart that Rose is alive.
This is when their paths crossed. Charlie went to Eves crumbling London abode to seek help in searching for Rose. Eve was far from the self-assured brave young spy thirty years back. She turned into a foul-mouthed drunkard because of the dismantling of The Alice Network years back. Charlie perseveres and enlists her unlikely partner in the assurance that she holds clues to the possible whereabouts of Rose. Charlie and Eve take on challenges and unlock clues to the mysteries that surround the missing figures during World War II. This high-staked mission transforms both Charlie and Eve in ways that only an aftermath of war can. Their mission leads them to search for ghosts of the vanished and confront the demons of their past.
Quinn successfully narrates the tales of two women split by different times and circumstances yet the aftermath of war caused their paths to intertwine in a suspenseful tale. She brilliantly captured the unwavering spirit of the women during wartime Europe.
Kate Quinns first historical wartime fiction The Alice Network is a tribute to the bravery of the women during the first and second World Wars. This novel is acclaimed as a bestseller both by the New York Times & USA Today. Globe and Mail dubbed The Alice Network as the #1 Historical Fiction Bestseller. Quinns historical masterpiece was also included in the roster of NPRs 2017 Best Books of the Year, Girly Book Club and Bookbubs Biggest Historical Fiction Books of the Year.
